Firefighter

Pending Council Approval 7 / 24 / 25 : Under the general supervision of the Clive Fire Department Officers, provides emergency medical care to sick and injured persons, controls and extinguishes fires, performs rescue, protects life and property and maintains equipment.

Examples of Essential Job Functions :

• Responds to calls, for the potential for emergency medical service.
• Within the limits of his / her medical certification, provides emergency medical care to the sick and injured.
• Within the limits of his / her medical certification, operates and maintains emergency medical equipment.
• Communicates with hospital emergency departments, nurses, physicians and physician designees.
• Completes a pre-hospital medical report on all patients seen treated or transported.
• Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls. Selects hose nozzle, depending on type of fire, and directs stream of water or chemicals onto fire.
• Positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings to assist individuals from burning structures.
• Creates openings in buildings for ventilation.
• Protects property from water and smoke by use of waterproof salvage covers, smoke ejector and fans.
• Communicates with others during emergency operations with radio or portable telephone.
• Maintains apparatus, buildings and equipment.
• Participates in drills, demonstrations and courses in emergency medical care techniques, firefighting techniques and other emergency skills.
• Regular attendance is essential for this position.

Must have an understanding of the Clive Fire Department Policies and SOG's.

Knowledge of local fire and emergency medical operations.

Knowledge of fire, rescue and emergency medical techniques.

Knowledge of hazardous materials operations.

Knowledge of building construction and fire behavior.

Ability to maintain favorable working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, city officials, the officials of other jurisdictions, the business community and the general public.

Must be able to work as part of a team and / or team leader under stress caused by emergencies, danger or criticism.

Ability to solve problems with several abstract and concrete variables using logic and scientific thinking.

Ability to perform arithmetic, algebraic calculations.

Ability to read, write and comprehend the English language.

Ability to use PC based computer programs.

Ability to perform all job duties safely and in accordance with applicable rules, guidelines, policies and training.

Education Training and Experience :

Education Required : High school diploma, HiSET (formerly known as GED), or high school equivalency diploma

Training Required : EMT- P, PS, or RN exception certified through the Iowa Department of Health, current ACLS & BLS

Firefighter I certified through the State of Iowa

Education Preferred : Paramedic Specialist, PALS, PEPP or PPC, AMLS

Experience Preferred : 2 years EMT- P or RN exception; 1 year PS

2 years firefighting

Required Qualifications :

Must be at least 18 years of age

Must obtain a valid Commercial Driver License issued by the State of Iowa

Shall generally be available for off-hour meetings, phone calls and special assignments

Must pass department physical ability test

Pass a physical fitness examination by a medical agency approved by the Clive Fire Department

Must live within 30 miles or 30 minutes of the city limits of Clive

Job Responsibilities Related to Patient Privacy :

The employee is expected to protect the privacy of all patient information in accordance with the Clive Fire Department privacy policies, procedures and practices as required by state and federal law and in accordance with general principles of professionalism as a health care provider or privileged ancillary staff member. Failure to comply with company policies and procedures on patient privacy may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment, membership or association with the City of Clive Fire Department.

The employee may access protected health information and other patient information only to the extent that is necessary to complete job duties. The employee may only share such information with those who have a need to know specific patient information you have in your possession to complete their job responsibilities related to treatment, payment or quality assurance and improvement operations.

The employee is expected and encouraged to report, without threat of retaliation, any concerns regarding company policies and procedures on patient privacy and any observed practices in violation of that policy to the designated privacy officer.

The employee is expected to actively participate in company privacy training and is required to communicate privacy policy information to coworkers, students, patients and others in accordance with company policy.
