Position Summary
The Failure Analysis Engineer is responsible for investigating and determining the root cause of material, component, and system-level failures on advanced Formula 1 power unit hardware. This role supports continuous improvement, reliability growth, and regulatory compliance by applying a range of analytical, metallurgical, and diagnostic techniques.
Key Responsibilities
- Root Cause Investigation : Conduct detailed mechanical and materials failure investigations on components from the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), Energy Recovery System (ERS), and supporting subsystems.
- Testing & Analysis : Perform non-destructive evaluations (X-ray / CT, dye penetrant, ultrasonic) to identify defects. Lead destructive testing when required, including sectioning, hardness testing, and microstructural analysis. Interpret test data to identify manufacturing, design, or service-related causes.
- Reporting & Communication : Produce clear, concise technical reports suitable for internal stakeholders, customers, and regulatory bodies. Present findings to engineering, quality, and production teams to drive corrective actions.
- Continuous Improvement : Recommend design, process, or material changes to prevent recurrence. Contribute to the development of internal standards and best practices for failure analysis and component life monitoring.
Qualifications
Education : Bachelor's or Master's degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.Experience : 3+ years in failure analysis, metallurgical engineering, or forensic materials investigation (motorsport, aerospace, or high-performance automotive preferred). Hands-on experience with SEM / EDS, metallographic preparation, and non-destructive testing.Skills & Competencies : Strong understanding of fatigue, fracture mechanics, and high-temperature material behavior. Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and manufacturing processes (CNC, additive manufacturing). Excellent technical writing and data presentation skills. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, confidential R&D environment with tight deadlines.Key Attributes
