Job Description
Performs a variety of skilled and unskilled tasks in the custodian care and maintenance of city buildings, parks and playgrounds. Works under the supervision of either the Building Maintenance Supervisor and / or Park Operations Supervisor and / or Coordinator or Crew Leader. May supervise temporary employees or community service workers.
Primary duties and responsibilities include changing light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, shampooing, steam cleaning, stripping, waxing, polishing, and buffing floors, carpets, and furniture; cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and replenishing supplies; cleaning spills; cleaning drinking fountains, mirrors, tables, walls, fixtures, blinds, light fixtures, etc.; washing windows, walls, metal, and woodwork; cleaning rain gutters; sweeping roofs and sidewalks; picking up litter from around buildings and grounds; performing minor semi-skilled interior building maintenance and repairs such as painting, floor covering, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, and other unskilled and semi-skilled trade work; inspecting and maintaining assigned equipment and small tools for proper operating condition; opening and closing, locking and unlocking facilities as needed; keeping a record of work completed; maintaining current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of building maintenance; maintaining city facilities using a variety of power equipment including mowers, weed-eaters, edgers, power-washers, etc.; performing various labor duties as part of a crew in construction and maintenance projects; performing all duties in conformance to appropriate safety standards.
Qualifications
Necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities include working knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance; working knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs; some knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions; skill in operation of listed tools and equipment; ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule; ability to lift heavy objects, walk, and stand for long periods of time; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to establish effective working relationships; ability to perform a heavy manual task for extended periods of time.
Tools and equipment include floor buffers, steam cleaners, carpet cleaners, washers, vacuums, mops, brooms, dusting equipment, weed-eaters, edgers, various power tools dealing with park maintenance.
Physical demands include reaching with hands and arms; standing, walking; using hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; sitting; climbing or balancing; stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling; talking or hearing; lifting and / or moving up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifting and / or moving more than 100 pounds; close vision and ability to adjust focus.
Work environment includes occasional exposure to near moving mechanical parts, high, precarious places, wet and / or humid conditions, outdoor weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and noise levels from quiet to loud.
