Distinctive Healthcare is currently seeking to hire a full time Optometrist at The United States Penitentiary, Lee (USP Lee) in Lee County, Virginia.
Provide optometry services commensurate with community standards which include, but are not limited to :
Diagnosing and treating a wide range of eye diseases as well as helping to facilitate the management of related systemic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disorders, sexually transmitted diseases, and rheumatologic conditions.
Providing treatment of visual disorders through prescription of corrective lenses (to include contact lenses when appropriate according to policy and subject to approval of the Clinical Director) and vision training and pharmacological means.
Performing minor surgical procedures including, but not limited to, anterior segment foreign body removal and suture removal.
Completing ocular tonometry exams and full visual field tests.
Recognizing the need for referral to other providers, such as ophthalmologists, and following proper procedures for ordering consultations outside of the institution.
Minor repair, fitting, and adjustment of eyeglass frames.
Accomplishing all procedures within standard infection control protocols.
Assisting in patient dismissal from the clinic upon completion of treatment as well as ensuring follow up care instructions are understood.
Maintaining optical examination equipment through normal procedures including cleaning and sterilizing as well as other minor repairs. Any defective equipment should be properly reported for corrective action to be taken.
Properly storing and maintaining adequate levels of supplies in assigned rooms and operatories. If, at any time, the incumbent notices any supplies running low in the supply room, he / she immediately notifies the person responsible so that supplies can be reordered.
Ensuring instruments and unapproved items are not left in the clinic during non-patient care hours and that proper storage and security procedures are adhered to, as instructed.
Properly processing and documenting examination results into the patient electronic medical record as well as assisting in audits and reviews of records.
Properly containing and disposing of hazardous biological waste following all applicable laws, policies, and local procedures.
Completing clerical and support duties, including utilization of institutional-specific computer programs such as SENTRY, as necessary.
Individuals providing optometry services under the contract award must meet all the following requirements :

Preferred qualifications and experience include :
1. Experience in providing healthcare in a correctional setting.
2. Additional professional education and certifications
The contractor shall provide a resume and any requested documentation, along with a copy of all diplomas and / or certificates to support the employees stated qualifications.
The contract employee shall immediately inform, in writing, to the Contract Officer's Representative (COR) and Administrative Contracting Officer, any adverse action taken by any regulatory body involving their licensure or certification. This includes, but is not limited to, suspensions, revocations, or restrictions on licensure.
