The City of Pasadena Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department is currently seeking a part-time Recreation Leader to provide a variety of recreational duties including special event setup, leading and planning recreational activities, coaching youth sports, front desk coverage, facility reservations-including sports field monitoring and supply inventory in the Villa Parke Community Center and Robinson Park Recreation center. This position works up to 19 hours per week, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Theideal candidate will have prior recreation experience that includes heavy public contact, field trips, special events, sports, and work with community-based organizations, youth, teens, and seniors. This position serves a vital role for patrons visiting the park and / or community center. Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Hours of Operation :

  • Monday thru Thursday 8 : 00 A.M. – 8 : 00 P.M.
  • Friday 8 : 00 A.M. – 5 : 00 P.M.
  • Saturday 8 : 00 A.M – 5 : 00 P.M.

  • Under direct supervision assists Recreation coordinators and Recreation Specialist I / II in providing general assistance and support to assigned recreation program and activities.
  • Sets up and issues equipment for recreational activities; assists in providing on-site supervision of recreation program and activity participants; and performs a variety of general and routine administrative tasks in support of recreation programs.
  • Provides general assistance within an assigned recreation program including sports, special events, after school programs, day camps, arts and crafts, or other recreation programs.
  • Assists in providing on-site supervision to program participants.
  • Assists program participants in recreation activities in assigned areas.
  • Assists in preparing recreational facilities for use including ensuring that appropriate equipment and supplies are available for classes and events.
  • Sets up and takes down equipment; issues and collects recreation equipment and supplies.
  • Assists chaperones on field trips and outings.
  • Coaches and organizes games and sports activities.
  • Assists in the encouragement of participation and good sportsmanship.
  • Responds to public inquires in a courteous manner.
  • Provides information within the area of assignment.
  • Performs a variety of routine office work including assisting at the front counter and answering phones.
  • Knowledge of general sports and recreational activities and programs including the techniques, rules and equipment used in various sports, games and special events. Policies and procedures relating to the safety of participants.
  • Provides general assistance and support for assigned recreation programs and activities.
  • Organizes and supervises a variety of activities at various types of sites recognizing the basic needs of those involved in the programs.
  • Effectively interacts with the public and City staff; sets up and takes down equipment for programs and special events.
  • Performs duties outdoors involving walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    • Minimum qualifications

  • 50 hours of experience as a volunteer and / or paid

    • leader in recreation

    physical education,

    or related field are required.

    Desired qualifications

  • 200 hours as a paid

    • leader in recreation, physical education

    , or related field is highly desired.

  • Current enrollment in a college or university majoring in Recreation or a related field is desirable.

    • SELECTION PROCESS :

    The selection process may consist of any combination of training and experience evaluation, Subject Matter Expert (SME) review, structured interview panel, and department-level interviews.

    There are currently multiple part-time (up to 19 hours per week) vacancies in Villa Parke Community center and Robinson Park Recreation Center of the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department. The resulting eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill these vacancies and similar vacancies in the future.
