Overview
This position leads and supports capacity planning efforts to ensure the reliability, resilience, and efficiency of ComEd's electric distribution system. This role develops and applies advanced planning methodologies, load forecasting, and system modeling to anticipate future grid needs driven by electrification, distributed energy resources (DER), climate impacts, and policy mandates such as the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA). The role collaborates across engineering, operations, and regulatory teams to identify and justify infrastructure investments, optimize system performance, and support decarbonization. It provides technical expertise and strategic guidance to inform capital planning, grid modernization initiatives, and customer programs. The position may require extended hours for coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.
Primary Duties
- Performs capacity planning studies of the ComEd distribution system using CYME power flow analysis software. Prepares load forecasts and analyzes modification and modernization impacts to the distribution grid.
- Designs electrical drawings in AutoCAD and prepares scope and cost estimates for general load growth, Reliability, DER interconnection, Voltage Optimization, Distribution Automation, Electrification, Data Center, and substation projects.
- Evaluates, develops, and leads projects that have significant financial and operational impact. Plans, writes, and performs tasks for project deliverables.
- Provides support to the distribution operations department for planned or emergency switching requests.
- Participates in or leads cross-departmental meetings / conference calls to ensure alignment within the company (may include providing direct oversight of contractors).
- Serves as an expert for a designated planning area.
- Supports regulatory filings and may serve as an expert witness or provide expert opinions on planning-related information.
- Recommends strategies to improve system performance and cost-effectiveness to align with company goals.
- Provides mentorship, peer review, and technical training to capacity planning staff and engineers.
- Engages with technical and industry organizations to remain informed on emerging technology and relevant challenges in the utility sector. Makes recommendations for business decisions regarding new technologies, engineering techniques, and tools.
