Scope of Services
The UX Design Lead is a strategic leader who advocates for user-driven and data-based digital experiences. This position reports to OTI Digital Service and works with the Mayor’s Office Innovation Team to improve the digital experience of child care access for New Yorkers. The UX Design Lead will leverage interaction design and front-end development skills to create prototypes for user testing and implement design solutions for parents and childcare providers, ensuring the hub serves as a comprehensive resource for information, referrals, and services related to childcare in New York. The Hub is nearing launch, so the role will lead final design adjustments, develop and test feature prototypes for version 2.0, and after launch track performance metrics, refine the design, and build out new features for version 2.0.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate user needs into design solutions
- Develop prototypes and high-fidelity designs for the childcare hub website
- Conduct prototype testing, analyze findings, and develop design recommendations
- Collaborate with a content strategist to develop the overall content design strategy and enhance user experience
Mandatory Skills / Experience

At least 8 years of proven experience in user experience design, with a strong portfolio showing successful user-friendly consumer-facing solutionsStrong sense of visual design including typography, spacing, and layoutProficiency in Figma with demonstrated experience in independently creating end-to-end design solutionsStrong understanding of user-centered design processes, including mapping users’ digital journeys, mocking up low to high-fidelity designs, and creating testable prototypes that enhance usability and accessibilityAbility to synthesize user research and data insights into design hypotheses and solutionsAbility to receive and synthesize feedback to improve designsExperience working with product and content strategists to translate outlines and requirements into design solutionsExperience working with developers to test prototypes and conduct visual QA to ensure products are built as intendedStrong communication skills to articulate design concepts clearly to partners and cross-functional teamsDesirable Skills / Experience
The successful candidate is expected, but not required to possess the following :
Bachelor’s degree in Design, UX, HCI, Computer Science, or related fieldExperience working in cross-disciplinary teams with product managers, engineers, and content strategistsExperience in public sector or government partnershipsAbility to drive design projects from concept to implementation with knowledge of design and research methodologiesExperience conducting usability testing and translating insights into actionable recommendationsFamiliarity with limited design systems and adapting components for user needs while considering technical feasibilityUnderstanding of accessibility standards and inclusive design practicesCommitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in design practiceSeniority
