As a Sewer Utility Operator, you will play a critical role in maintaining and improving the City's sanitary and storm sewer systems. This position involves operating specialized equipment, performing pump station maintenance, and supporting preventative and emergency repairs. You'll be expected to continually develop and master new skills to support the department's progressive goals and deliver first-class service to Florence residents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to after-hours emergencies (on-call rotation)
  • Maintain safe work zones, including traffic control and confined space entries
  • Identify specific hand tools and their proper applications
  • Navigate GIS web maps for field work and asset identification
  • Safely operate specialty equipment, including high pressure sewer jetters, combination cleaner truck, and CCTV equipment
  • Maintain various nozzles and understand their applications per situation and pipe material
  • Perform pump station maintenance, including plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repairs
  • Manage assigned tasks and generate daily totals
  • Success Measures

    By the end of your first year, you will be fully acclimated to the range of services provided by the Waste Water Division. This includes a strong understanding of utility ownership, as well as the preventative maintenance and repair procedures necessary to ensure the continued delivery of first-class service to the residents of Florence.

    Education & Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safe work practices
  • Special Requirements

  • Valid Driver's License with insurability to operate City vehicles
  • Ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 6 months of employment

  • Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in indoor and outdoor settings
  • Work in adverse weather conditions including rain, snow, extreme heat, and cold
  • Navigate confined spaces, elevated areas, and active construction zones
  • Operate heavy equipment and vehicles safely during both day and night shifts
  • Maintain visual acuity to identify hazards and read documentation
  • May be exposed to loud noises, dust, fumes, chemicals, and other occupational hazards
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
