Develop skills in editing, proofreading, and organization. Undergraduate or graduate student in Middle East studies, international affairs, political science, or a related field. Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in a team. Strong time management and ability to prioritize tasks. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Excellent written and verbal communication. Attention to detail and accuracy in record-keeping. Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., Excel, Spreadsheets). Proficiency (or fluency) in a Middle Eastern language is a plus, but not required. Experience working on a magazine or journal is a plus. Hands-on experience in non-profit / think-tank Mentorship and guidance from experienced professionals Networking opportunities within the industry

About Middle East Institute
Founded in 1946, the Middle East Institute is the oldest Washington-based institution dedicated solely to the study of the Middle East. It is a non-partisan think tank providing expert policy analysis, educational and professional development services, and a hub for engaging with the region's arts and culture.
About the role
The Middle East Journal is the oldest peer-reviewed publication dedicated to the study of the modern Middle East. The team seeks an intern to assist in the publication of quarterly issues of the Journal and help with the general operations. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented and highly organized individual with a strong background in editing and writing, as well as a demonstrated interest in the Middle East. They should be an excellent communicator with the ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and contribute to the success of our publication. Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of accuracy and integrity will be key. The candidate must also be able to work in person at our office in DC.
What you'll do
- Assist with the editing and proofreading of scholarly articles.
- Assist with managing subscriptions to the Journal.
- Assist with researching reviewers for articles going through the peer review process.
- Assist in choosing articles for upcoming publications.
- Read newly published books on the Middle East and write short descriptive paragraphs for our Recent Publications section.
- Work on organizational projects intended to help the smooth operations of the Journal.
- Help with the operations of the Institute generally by managing the front desk for one hour each shift.
