Are you ready to make a meaningful impact through public service? The Iowa State Public Defender's Office is seeking a highly motivated, skilled, and enthusiastic attorney to serve as a Public Defender 2 in our Sioux City Juvenile office located in Buena Vista County, Iowa.

Who We Are

The mission of the Office of the State Public Defender is to ensure that all indigent persons in Iowa are provided high-quality legal representation in criminal, juvenile, and other eligible proceedings in the most efficient and fiscally responsible manner.

What You'll Do

As a Public Defender attorney in this position, you will :

  • Advocate for indigent clients in assigned cases at every stage of the criminal justice system.
  • Receive training and mentoring from experienced public defenders in an environment that encourages growth and career development.
  • Represent clients in court at pre-trial hearings, trials, sentencings, and other court proceedings.
  • Prepare defenses, conduct legal research, gather facts, and interview clients and witnesses to assess case merits and determine the appropriate course of action.
  • Conduct pretrial discovery, including depositions, plea withdrawals, and motions to suppress evidence.
  • Negotiate plea bargains, dismissals, or other case dispositions with prosecutors.
  • Work closely with clients to discuss case strategies and trial preparations.
  • Maintain communication with clients regarding case status and answer questions.
  • Identify legal issues, research applicable law, and draft motions and briefs.
  • Prepare legal documents such as arraignments, guilty pleas, motions, briefs, and correspondence.
  • May oversee investigator work in accordance with office policies.
  • Maintain case files, prepare time reports, and close files following office procedures.

    This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals & Licensing - Public Defender.

    Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

    Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements :

  • Graduation from an accredited law school, possession of a current Iowa law license, and at least two years of full-time criminal trial advocacy or prosecution experience.
  • Current, continuous employment in the Iowa executive branch, including at least 18 months as a Public Defender 1.
