Job Title : Applied Mathematics & Statistics Intern Reports to : Principal Scientist
FLSA Status : Part-Time (Non-Exempt) Department : Space Science
Position Objective :
- To support an interdisciplinary team that develops new generation scientific algorithms in space science through mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques, and implements these into software deliverable to our customers.
Essential Functions :
Support hypothesis testing through statistical analysis methods to analyze and interpret effectiveness of algorithmsSupport the development and testing of mathematical models of real dataSupport the implementation of mathematical formulae and algorithms into software codeSupport modifying and debugging codePerform verification and quality assurance for new and existing mathematical algorithms and codeHelp prepare and review presentations, papers, and reports to convey statistical analysis, mathematical modeling, and software development to customersEnsure accuracy of your work and follow procedures in documenting work; maintain notebook of daily activities and provide weekly reports of workOther duties as assignedRequired Qualifications :
Undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled in a program related to the field of mathematics or statistics with a superior academic recordBasic understanding of software development and knowledge of various programming languagesAttention to detail and effective time and schedule management skillsEffective organizing, planning, and problem-solving skillsAbility to adapt within a small team to support evolving customer requirementsAbility to execute instructions and communication in written, oral, and diagram formDemonstrated strong writing, fact-gathering, and analytical skillsBasic computer skills including, but not necessarily limited to, Microsoft Office products (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)Preferred Qualifications :
College sophomore or junior with cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) of 3.5 or higherA minor or dual degree in computer science or computer engineeringTheoretic knowledge and experience of Agile software development practices and UMLKnowledge or experience in Python, MATLAB, and / or C++ programming languagesExperience with machine learning, artificial intelligence, and numerical optimization techniquesEmployment Structure :

Hours : The internship is a part-time, year-round position that requires a minimum of sixteen hours per week of work. The hours are flexible and they can change from one semester to another based on the students class schedule.
