Payroll Specialist

Location : Onsite - Denver, CO.

Schedule : Monday-Friday, 8 : 00 a.m.-4 : 30 p.m.

Compensation : $72,500 - $85,000

About the Opportunity

Our client, a government agency is adding a Payroll Specialist position to strengthen its internal operations. This is a newly created role designed to bring focus and accuracy to payroll functions as the organization transitions payroll software.

The Payroll Specialist will report directly to the Finance Director and take ownership of payroll processing, reconciliation, and employee support. This individual will serve as the primary point of contact for payroll-related inquiries, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time while providing exceptional service with professionalism and confidentiality.

Key Responsibilities

Process Semi-Monthly Payroll (60%)

Manage end-to-end payroll for approximately 140 employees, including full-time, part-time, and salaried staff.

Ensure accuracy in time reporting, deductions, garnishments, and benefit calculations.

Maintain compliance with all applicable laws, internal policies, and collective agreements.

Act as the face of payroll, answering employee questions and addressing concerns with empathy and discretion.

Payroll Reconciliation (20%)

Reconcile payroll reports and general ledger accounts to ensure accuracy.

Identify and resolve discrepancies, maintaining meticulous records and documentation.

Support quarterly and year-end reporting, including W-2s, 1099s, and other compliance filings.

Financial Support (20%)

Assist the Finance Director with special projects and financial initiatives.

Support the implementation and optimization of the ADP payroll system during the ongoing software transition.

Collaborate with accounting and HR to ensure payroll data integrity and consistency across departments.

Qualifications

Education : High school diploma or GED required; associate's or bachelor's degree preferred.

Experience :

Minimum of 3 years in a Payroll Specialist or equivalent payroll-focused role.

Prior experience processing payroll in a government or public sector environment strongly preferred.

Demonstrated understanding of wage laws, deductions, and payroll accounting principles.

Experience using ADP or other major payroll systems preferred.

Certifications : CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) or FPC certification a plus.

Skills :

Strong problem-solving and attention to detail - must be able to identify errors quickly and accurately.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; approachable and responsive to employee needs.

High integrity and discretion when handling sensitive payroll information.
