Facilities Maintenance Worker

The Department : The Engineering & Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining the City's public assets, including all infrastructure, right of way, parks, facilities and the City's vehicle and equipment fleet. The Engineering Division oversees the City's Capital Improvement Program (CIP), Storm Water & Environmental Compliance, Traffic Safety, and Engineering Permits, Plan Checks and Inspections for private development. The Public Works operations team provides essential services for the community through its four Divisions : Streets & Wastewater Maintenance, Parks Maintenance, Facilities Maintenance, and Fleet & Equipment Maintenance.

The Job : Under direction, to perform a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of City buildings and facilities; maintain, service, and repair the City-operated swimming pool, including auxiliary pumps, valves, machinery, and equipment; and perform related duties as required. This is a skilled, journey-level generalist class in the Facilities Maintenance division. Duties are typically split evenly between maintenance and repair of the large City-operated swimming pool and general maintenance and repair work to other City buildings and facilities. City employees work a 4 / 10 workweek, Monday through Thursday, typically 7am to 5 : 30pm but schedule may vary. May be assigned to support events or respond to building emergencies on the weekend or in the evenings when needed. City offices are closed on Fridays. City facilities will also close for a period of approximately two weeks in December with time off for non-essential personnel.

Key Responsibilities : The following duties and responsibilities are representative of those typically performed by positions assigned to this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these duties and / or may perform similar related tasks not listed here. Inspects and repairs swimming pool machinery and maintains proper water chemistry levels; alters, repairs, or constructs articles and structures of wood, such as room additions, partitions, roofs, counters, benches, tables, forms, and fences; maintains doors, window, and sashes; operates power saws, jointers, and other woodworking machinery; uses brush or spray gun in applying paint, varnish, shellac, lacquer, or other protective and decorative finishes to various surfaces; scrapes, sands, fills, and prepares surfaces for painting or repainting; applies under- and finish coats; repairs and replaces locks; may be required to do cement, brick, or plaster work; installs water piping; repairs and replaces pipes, valves, fittings, and other plumbing fixtures; packs faucets; wipes and flushes joints; cleans out drains and obstructions in water systems; makes repairs to electrical appliances and fixtures, rewires and replaces defective and worn parts; maintains and services air conditioning systems; orders materials necessary to complete job; leads the work of helpers; assists other trade specialists as needed.

Minimum Qualifications : Training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be : four (4) years of general building maintenance experience. Highly desirable : High School Diploma or equivalent. Knowledge and skills in all phases and aspects of the maintenance, alteration, and repair of buildings and facilities; standard methods, materials, and equipment used in the building trades. Ability to use standard building maintenance and equipment skillfully and efficiently; work above ground level; read sketches and blueprints; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; perform heavy and physically demanding work for lengthy and continuous periods of time; establish and maintain effective working relations with others. Licenses, Certifications, or Special Requirements : Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
