Overview

As a Mechanical Engineering Aide , you won't just be observing—you will be hands-on with real satellite communications hardware from day one at our Ludlow, MA office. Your projects will span refurbishment, repair, production, and redesign of advanced antenna systems and pedestals, including the Navy Multiband Terminal (NMT) program. This is a Part-Time opportunity. Working side-by-side with a team of senior engineers eager to mentor you, you will :

  • Test and troubleshoot motors, bearings, supports, and other precision mechanical components.
  • Design and model components using SolidWorks, delivering 3D CAD models and fabrication-ready drawings.
  • Build and refine custom fixtures, tools, and mechanical assemblies for production and testing.
  • Innovate on next-gen systems—from brainstorming new concepts to supporting production launches.
  • Get exposure to antenna testing facilities, rapid prototyping, and real-world defense-grade engineering.

  • In this role, you will :

  • Take part in real-world engineering projects from concept to production, gaining exposure to all stages of the design cycle.
  • Design & Development

  • Research, design, and document mechanical solutions—from concept sketches to production-ready parts.
  • Create system and component block diagrams, evaluate design tradeoffs, and perform mechanical and thermal analyses using CAD tools.
  • Assist in developing assembly aids, test fixtures, and custom tooling to support production and testing.
  • Collaboration & Mentorship

  • Work closely with senior mechanical engineers and the electrical engineering team to define and refine electromechanical requirements.
  • Partner with test technicians and operations teams to build, assemble, and test prototypes.
  • Participate in design reviews (preliminary, critical, production readiness) to learn how ideas evolve into hardware.
  • Testing & Validation

  • Support product qualification testing and troubleshooting efforts to ensure systems meet performance goals.
  • Gain hands-on experience with antenna testing ranges, environmental testing, and performance analysis.
  • Documentation & Professional Skills

  • Contribute to the creation of manufacturing documentation packages and other engineering deliverables.
  • Learn to work within structured engineering processes like the Serco Gate Review process.
  • Build professional habits : punctuality, confidentiality, ethics, and collaboration with peers and customers.
  • Qualifications

  • U.S Citizenship required
  • High School Diploma / GED
  • Students currently pursuing an Engineering Degree at an accredited bachelor's program
  • Rising Juniors and Seniors Preferred
  • Class experience in CAD modeling and analysis (SolidWorks experience preferred)
  • Strong communication skills and a professional demeanor
  • Ability to work in a highly dynamic environment
  • Self-motivated with a strong work initiative
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work well against deadlines and adapt to change
  • Proficient with PC and MS Office Suite
  • Additional desired experience and skills

  • Introductory knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) is a plus
  • Introductory knowledge in creating detailed part and assembly drawings to ASME Y14.5 drawing standards is a plus

    In compliance with state and local laws regarding pay transparency, the salary range for this role is $39,330.26 to $58,995.39; however, Serco considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, education / training, and key skills.
