About Our Atascocita Location (Harris County) : Gateway's largest facility, Atascocita is a residential correctional center focused solely on substance use treatment for court-ordered clients. With 12 buildings and nearly 500 clients, the facility provides a structured, secure environment without armed guards. Staff work collaboratively in a team of 170, including counselors, probation officers, and support staff. The location is undergoing major renovations to become a state-of-the-art treatment center. We foster a supportive culture with team-building activities, recognition programs, and a strong mission-driven focus on recovery and rehabilitation.
Work Schedule : Monday through Friday from 8 : 00 AM - 5 : 00 PM
Cognitive Counselors
Cognitive Counselors are responsible for :
Under direct supervision, provides support, intervention, advice, and conflict resolution during substance use disorder treatment to encourage clients through difficult phases of recovery by basic didactic group and individual counseling. Under direct supervision, carries a caseload. Maintains clinical documentation. Performs office administrative duties.
Job Responsibilities :
Conducts client interviews to review substance use disorder and treatment history. Under weekly supervision and with supervisor's approval, evaluates client response to treatment to recommend modifications to the treatment plan and assist with caseloads and development of individualized treatment plan and preparing individually appropriate goals, interventions, and necessary support.Assists with and provides basic didactic group counseling, including psychoeducation, drug education, and family education to ensure peer support occurs.Under direct supervision provides individual client counseling, educational programs and lectures to address relapse prevention, problem solving, behavior modification, anger management, etc., and to assist in overcoming substance use disorder, adjusting to pro-social life, and making cognitive and behavioral changes.Under direct supervision and with supervisor's approval, carries caseload, per State and contract requirements.Collaborates with clients to develop discharge summary and plans for supervisor's approval to integrate aftercare treatment with referral resource services.Coordinates services to resolve emergency problems in crisis situations in support of continued recovery.Collects and maintains treatment records and reports to ensure organizational, regulatory, accreditation, and contractual compliance.Performs office administrative duties, such as answering telephones; relaying messages; responding to inquiries regarding program services and policies; filing, photocopying and faxing documents; planning special events, assembling intake packets, etc.Performs other duties as assigned.Minimum Education and Experience :
Masters in counseling, social work, criminal justice or a related fieldLicensed Chemical Dependency Counselor Intern (LCDC-I) or a qualifying credential to conduct counseling in a treatment environment.Some experience in a forensic counseling setting or with substance abuse preferredKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Basic knowledge of the principles of human growth and psychosocial developmentBasic knowledge of group and individual dynamics, conflict resolution and intervention techniques based on client maturation levelBasic understanding of mental health disorders requiring referralsBasic communication skills to exchange information and interact with various internal and external audiences regarding client careActive listening skills and social perceptivenessAbility to read and interpret policies and instructionsAbility to understand side effects and impact of medications on clientAdaptability / flexibility : ability to shift prioritiesPhysical Requirements :
Ability to read, write, and understand and follow written instructionsAbility to use a keyboard and video display terminal to receive, retrieve, and / or audit information and dataAbility to record, proofread and check documents and files for accuracyAbility to respond to telephones, and to hear and detect alarms and unusual noisesAbility to walk and move about the facilities for up to two hours at a time, to monitor and interact with clientsWork Environment :
Works in a correctional facility where there is exposure to potentially disruptive and violent inmates. The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions, however might experience relatively few discomforts due to dust, dirt, noise and the like.Compensation :
