Fire Inspector
This position conducts inspections and plan reviews to ensure compliance with fire codes.
Examples of duties include :
- Conducting field inspections of permitted development to ensure compliance with all codes and ordinances; conducting field inspections of residential, multi-family, or commercial structures.
- Reviewing and analyzing building site plans to determine compliance with codes and ordinances; receiving applications and coordinating plan reviews for new construction and renovations.
- Investigating life safety code violation complaints from the public.
- Performing annual inspections of new and existing businesses.
- Inspecting and reviewing permitting for special events venues to ensure compliance with life safety codes.
- Reviewing fire alarm run reports and following up with service companies to ensure compliance.
- Conducting water flow calculations for fire suppression systems.
- Preparing a variety of regular and special reports.
- Performing firefighting duties as needed.
- Performing related duties.
Typical qualifications include :
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship / internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training.Florida Firefighter I and Firefighter II certifications are preferred.Florida EMT certification preferred.Possession of or ability to readily obtain Fire Safety Inspector I certification.CPR certifications.Knowledge required by the position includes :
Principles, methods, and techniques used in fire code inspections.Building and fire code enforcement principles.Current and accepted fire prevention, firefighting, rescue, emergency medical, and hazardous materials procedures.Emergency medical protocols, principles, and standards.Fire and emergency response equipment, tools, and vehicles.Departmental and city policies and procedures and related federal, state, and local guidelines.City streets and geography.Computers and job-related software programs.Skill in operating emergency vehicles and equipment.Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.Skill in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports.Skill in oral and written communication.The work consists of varied fire inspection and code enforcement duties. The purpose of this position is to participate in the departments fire inspection, code enforcement, and fire prevention activities. Success in this position contributes to the safety of life and property in the City.
Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city employees, association managers, general manager, job site superintendents, other inspectors, property owners, and members of the public. Contacts typically exchange information, resolve problems, justify matters, and provide services.
The work is typically performed in an office, outdoors, and at emergency and fire scenes. The employee may be exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, inclement weather, and a variety of potentially life-threatening situations. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.
