Job Summary :
The PCU Nurse delivers direct patient care to acutely ill adults who require close observation and frequent vital signs monitoring, including those with cardiac conditions, post-surgical recovery, and chronic illnesses with acute exacerbations. The nurse uses advanced clinical knowledge and critical thinking to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized care. This role requires collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality, evidence-based care.
Key Responsibilities :
Provide direct patient care to patients with moderate to high acuity.
Monitor and interpret cardiac telemetry (EKG).
Assess and document patient condition and vital signs frequently.
Administer medications, treatments, and perform procedures as ordered.
Respond to changes in patient condition promptly and appropriately.
Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary healthcare team.
Educate patients and families on care, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.
Use critical thinking to prioritize and manage care efficiently.
Follow protocols for sepsis, stroke, heart failure, and other acute conditions.
Ensure infection control and patient safety protocols are followed.
Participate in patient care conferences and quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications : Education :
ADN or BSN in Nursing required.
BSN preferred or required within a certain timeframe depending on institution.
Licensure / Certification :
Current and active RN license in the state of practice.
BLS and ACLS certifications required.
PCCN (Progressive Care Certified Nurse) preferred or encouraged.
Experience :
1-2 years of acute care or telemetry experience preferred.
Experience in PCU, step-down, or ICU is advantageous.
Skills and Abilities :
Strong assessment and clinical judgment skills.
Proficient in telemetry monitoring and recognizing cardiac rhythms.
Ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations.
Strong communication, teamwork, and documentation skills.
Competence in using EHR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner).
Time management and multitasking abilities.
Physical Requirements :
Ability to stand / walk for extended periods.
Ability to lift / move patients and equipment.
Frequent exposure to infectious diseases and bodily fluids.
Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
