Police Officer
Under general supervision, the incumbent performs a variety of patrol and related duties involving the prevention of crime, the protection of life and property, and the enforcement of Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances; directs and controls crowds and traffic at accidents or special events; assists with investigative work; provides information and assistance to the public; and performs related work as required.
This class performs the full range of law enforcement duties during the incumbent's active duty assignment. Shift schedules and job assignments may be changed periodically to ensure the maximum delivery of effective police service.
Examples of typical job functions include patrolling the city, responding to emergency calls, providing information and assistance to the public, ordering and directing emergency equipment, searching for missing subjects, following up on crime reports, overseeing the use and care of equipment, attending meetings, and coordinating and carrying out special assignments.
Qualifications include knowledge of law enforcement principles, investigation and identification techniques, rules of evidence, courtroom procedures, applicable laws, safety practices, first aid and CPR, operating a motor vehicle, record keeping, modern office practices, English usage, and techniques for representing the city and providing customer service. Ability to observe accurately, interpret and apply complex laws, prepare clear reports, identify community issues, make sound decisions, operate department equipment, establish filing systems, organize projects, use English effectively, use tact and independent judgment, and establish positive working relationships.
Education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities are qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, with specialized training in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field being highly desirable.
Licenses and certifications required include a valid California Driver's License, a Basic Certificate from the California State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, and firearms qualification.
Physical demands include mobility to work in an office setting, maintain physical standards to respond to emergencies, vision to read materials and use firearms, and hearing and speech to communicate. Fieldwork involves walking on uneven terrain, climbing structures, and frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and lifting.
Environmental elements include exposure to loud noise, temperature extremes, weather conditions, hazards, and interacting with upset staff and the public. Working conditions require a pre-employment physical and background investigation, willingness to work extended shifts, and exposure to dangerous situations.
