Job Purpose

This role provides high-quality, sophisticated legal advice and proactive counselling on commercial and contract legal services, and commercial disputes in a timely and cost-effective manner for various Honda entities (including AHM, HDMA, HRI, HISV, and HRC). The Counsel will draft and negotiate moderate to complex agreements, provide recommendations on company products, advise on and revise relevant company policies and procedures, and retain and supervise outside counsel in the handling of research, legal advice, and contract review / negotiation, while managing risks by identifying and implementing countermeasures.

Key Accountabilities

  • General Contracts advice and negotiation : Provide high-quality commercial contract advice, negotiation, and review in a timely and cost-effective manner, to enable the applicable Honda divisions to meet legal obligations and reduce risk for moderate to complex contracts.
  • Projects : Execute assigned projects to make sure that they are completed competently within the set deadlines and budget.
  • Commercial Disputes : Work with and support commercial disputes for applicable Honda entities. Manage applicable outside counsel and expert fees to reach the best long-term solution for Honda in moderate to complex matters.
  • Knowledge management : Follow changes in all relevant laws and regulations, and in contracting best practices, and exchange and share knowledge within the applicable Honda entity / division / department, as well as train Honda associates in legal best practices, to improve the awareness, quality, and effectiveness of the legal function.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school
  • California bar admittance
  • 5+ years of experience as an attorney in relevant / related areas, preferably including in-house experience
  • Good knowledge of Commercial, Contracts, and Regulatory legal practice areas
  • Strong experience in working with a team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong leadership abilities, able to motivate team, problem-solving, strategic thinking, customer satisfaction, building relationships, coaching, decision-making, risk analysis, flexibility / adaptability, patience, listening, risk taking, focusing on achieving results, and supporting others to achieve results, legal / technical knowledge.
