SUMMARY :
The Payroll & Benefits Manager plays a pivotal role in ensuring Riser Fitness delivers a seamless and compliant payroll and benefits experience to its team members.
This leader is responsible for overseeing accurate and timely payroll operations, administering employee benefits, and ensuring full compliance with federal, state, local, and international regulations.
In close partnership with the HRIS Manager and cross-functional stakeholders, the Payroll & Benefits Manager will drive process improvements, strengthen compliance, and enhance employee trust in payroll and benefits administration.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
Manage end-to-end payroll processing for bi-weekly and semi-monthly cycles across multiple states and jurisdictions, ensuring 100% accuracy and timeliness.
Ensure adherence to all federal, state, and local wage and hour laws, including overtime, minimum wage, time & attendance, and final pay requirements.
Administer complex payroll transactions such as garnishments, deductions, commissions, and bonus payments with precision.
Maintain accurate payroll records and generate timely payroll, tax, and compliance reports for leadership.
Oversee employee benefits programs including health, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement plans, and ancillary benefits.
Manage enrollment, life event changes, and terminations in alignment with regulatory requirements and internal policies.
Partner with the HRIS Manager to ensure seamless integration of benefits data across systems.
Support annual open enrollment, benefits communication, and vendor partnerships.
Collaborate with HR, Finance, and Operations to ensure alignment of payroll and benefits with organizational policies and financial objectives.
Serve as the primary point of contact for payroll and benefits inquiries, providing excellent support and education to employees.
Develop and deliver training sessions to leaders and employees as payroll and benefits regulations evolve.
Monitor and interpret regulatory changes in payroll and benefits, proactively updating processes to maintain compliance.
Identify process gaps and recommend automation or system enhancements to increase efficiency and reduce risk.
Maintain confidentiality and ensure proper controls are in place to safeguard sensitive employee data.
REQUIREMENTS :
Experience & Background
4+ years of multi-state, multi-unit payroll processing experience, with deep knowledge of wage and hour regulations and compliance requirements.
Demonstrated success managing payroll in fast-paced, high-volume environments (fitness, retail, hospitality, or similar industries strongly preferred).
Experience with sales commissions, incentive pay structures, and complex bonus administration.
International payroll experience strongly preferred (Mexico and Australia exposure highly valued).
Technical Expertise
Proficiency with HRIS and payroll platforms (e.g., Paycom, ADP, Workday, or equivalent).
Strong skills in Excel and reporting / analytics (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, data reconciliations).
Familiarity with EDI / 360 file feeds for benefits carriers, COBRA, and 401(k) vendors.
Working knowledge of general ledger mapping and payroll accounting principles highly preferred Compliance & Risk Management
Strong understanding of ACA, ERISA, COBRA, FLSA, and multi-state tax compliance (federal, state, and local).
Ability to interpret and apply regulatory changes to payroll and benefits processes in real time.
Familiarity with international compliance frameworks such as Mexico IMSS / INFONAVIT and Australian Superannuation.
Experience leading payroll / benefits audits and ensuring robust internal controls.
Leadership & Project Management
Proven ability to manage payroll and benefits vendors, brokers, and external partners.
Strong project management skills to lead open enrollment, system upgrades, and payroll migrations.
Experience creating and delivering trainings for employees and managers on payroll / benefits updates.
Ability to partner cross-functionally with HR, Finance, and Operations leaders to align on priorities.
