Zachary Piper Solutions is looking for a Software Engineering Manager to lead a team of AI software engineers focused on building core AI / ML products and infrastructure for national security and defense customers. The team will deliver backend systems, distributed platforms, and ML tooling used by public sector partners. The role is 50% software engineering and 50% team management.

Location : Washington, DC (Hybrid Remote – 3 to 4 days onsite / 1–2 days remote – based on program)

Key Responsibilities

• Drive engineering productivity, provide guidance, mentorship, and technical leadership to a team working on Generative AI projects
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and execute strategic roadmaps
• Navigate and deliver outcomes while managing complex public sector compliance requirements and frameworks
• Design and implement scalable backend systems for federal customers, leveraging modern and cloud-native AI infrastructure
• Develop distributed systems, data-intensive applications, and machine learning infrastructure to enable real impact for mission owners
• Build robust and reliable backend systems that can serve as standalone products, empowering customers to accelerate their AI ambitions
• Participate actively in customer engagements, working closely with stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver innovative solutions
• Assist in recruiting and hiring engineering professionals to build the team
