Fire Inspector / Investigator

POSTED SEPTEMBER 10, 2025 AND WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL FILLED. THIS PART-TIME POSITION IS TYPICALLY 19.5 HOURS PER WEEK WITH A VARIED SCHEDULE. IN ADDITION, IT IS PART OF A MANDATORY ON-CALL ROTATION APPROXIMATELY ONCE PER MONTH, LASTING ONE WEEK INCLUDING NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS. THE ON-CALL WEEK IS PAID WITH A STIPEND IN ADDITION TO AN HOURLY RATE IF CALLED FOR AN EMERGENCY.

General Description

Under general supervision of the Fire Marshal, Incumbent performs fire code inspections, plan reviews, and investigations, assuring compliance with the Connecticut Fire Safety Code, the Connecticut Fire Prevention Code and referenced standards.

Essential Duties

• Performs fire code inspections of buildings and public establishments and prepares related reports.
• Investigates the origin, cause and circumstances of fires, explosions, and burn injuries within the Town and prepares related reports and documents. Participates in on call duties for this purpose.
• Reviews plans and specifications to inform inspections, review abatement actions, and to assure fire safety code compliance for building permits.
• Issues abatement orders where violations are found or where regulations concerning flammable and combustible liquids, flammable gases, hazardous materials, explosives, fireworks and fuel emergencies apply; conducts follow up inspections.
• Maintains current knowledge of fire safety codes and standards.
• Provides code consultation to property owners, developers, contractors, and the public. Responds in a timely manner to complaints.
• Contributes to a respectful and safe work environment by fostering a culture of positive communication, ethical behavior, and emphasis on providing exceptional service to internal and external customers.

Qualifications Profile

State statutes and adopted codes, local ordinances and standards which pertain to fire safety inspections, and investigations

Read safety plans and construction plans

Interpersonal communication to establish and maintain effective working relationships

Physical / Mental Requirements
