Description :
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Nurses provide care for Level II, III, IV nurseries.
They care for both normal newborns and severely ill or early neonates requiring stabilization and transfer.
Experience caring for neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) infants is essential.
They require a comprehensive understanding of infants admitted to the NICU, including those with low birth weight, preterm delivery, and thermoregulation deficits.
Nurses assess neonatal conditions such as infections, birth defects, and cardiac defects.
They perform newborn testing such as hearing screening, cardiac testing, and lab work.
Providing age and culturally appropriate care to the patient and family is crucial.
They consult and coordinate with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
Monitoring patient vital signs such as blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate is a core responsibility.
Nurses initiate corrective actions whenever patients display adverse symptoms.
They follow continuous cardiac and respiratory monitor readings and report observed changes.
Tracking input and output is also required in day-to-day tasks.
Responsibilities include changing dressings, inserting catheters, and starting IVs.
Nurses administer infusion therapy, including IV fluids and antibiotics.
They monitor and adjust specialized equipment used on the patient population.
Preparing, administering, and recording prescribed medications is part of the role.
Adverse reactions to medications or treatments must be reported.
Assisting treating providers during examinations and procedures is included in job duties.
Nurses analyze lab results as needed.
Education, information, and emotional support provided to the patient and family are essential.
All care information must be recorded accurately and completely in a timely manner.
Other position-related duties may be assigned depending on the specific assignment.
Nurses complete unit and hospital orientation and follow safety rules and procedures.
They must respect the cultural and religious practices of patients cared for.
Upholding regulations is paramount, and punctuality for assigned shifts is expected.
