Managing Attorney - Assistant Chief Counsel with CalHR. This position provides hybrid telework opportunities, with in-person work required at least two days per week. This is subject to change based on operational needs.

About This Role

Under the general direction of the Deputy Chief Counsel, the Assistant Chief Counsel is responsible for the supervision, planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and reviewing the work of a team of attorneys within the Legal Division.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, plan, organize, direct, coordinate and review the work of a team of attorneys within the Legal Division.

Qualifications

  • Classification : ATTORNEY, ASSISTANT CHIEF COUNSEL
  • Salary : $14,513.00 - $17,742.00 / month
  • Special Requirements : The position(s) require(s) a CA State BAR License. You will be required to provide a copy of your license prior to being hired.
  • SOQ : All interested applicants are required to submit a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ). Instructions : Provide direct responses to each of the numbered items listed below. Include specific examples of education, training, and / or experience. SOQs should be limited to two pages, single-spaced, Arial 12.
  • Minimum Requirements & Special Instructions

  • The SOQ must include descriptions of legal experience practicing labor and employment law and supervisory / management experience.
  • Describe how inclusion and belonging affect the employee experience and what you will do as a manager to promote them.

    Desirable Qualifications

    In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, the following factors will provide the basis for competitive evaluation :

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; attention to detail.
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout the state and work long hours, including overnight stays and visits to state facilities.
  • Ability to adapt to changing assignments and deadlines with little notice.
  • Ability to analyze legal principles and apply them to complex problems; present clear statements of fact, law and argument.
  • Draft opinions, pleadings, rulings, regulations, and legislation; independently present difficult cases in court.
  • Plan, organize and direct a staff of attorneys; operate standard office equipment.
  • Knowledge

  • General legal principles, research methods, court procedures, rules of evidence and procedure.
  • Administrative law and proceedings before administrative bodies.
  • State and federal labor and employment law; public administration and supervision; equal employment opportunity program knowledge.
