Job Summary
The ECMO Specialist provides bedside critical care assistance to patients receiving ECMO therapy within IEC customer facilities. The ECMO Specialist I has a functional understanding of extracorporeal life support (ECLS) and mechanical circulatory support (MCS), and will participate in required IEC training for continuing education and experience. This position regularly reports to the clinical operations manager; at specific accounts an alternate IEC designee / coordinator may serve as an initial contact person in the chain of command.

Job Responsibilities
Skills and Knowledge : Excellent communication skills necessary to work with all hospital employees, physicians, patients, family members and community professionals. Has completed ECLS education modules and can demonstrate a cursory understanding of extracorporeal technology and treatments.Clinical Duties : Provide continuous monitoring of the ECLS patient and circuit (up to a 1 : 3 ratio, Specialist : patients). Monitor and adjust the ECLS blood flow and sweep gas flow per guidelines or orders. Recommend appropriate changes to patient management based on data and status. Review laboratory and radiographic reports and report irregularities. Collaborate with ECLS staff to coordinate tests and evaluations. Monitor coagulation tests and adjust anticoagulants per guidelines or orders. Monitor intake and output and make recommendations. Ensure supplies are stocked. Coordinate interventions with bedside staff. May assist with initiation of support and decannulation as directed.Documentation : Log hours, location, and expenses; document in the patient chart per hospital guidelines.Communication : Communicate professionally with Scheduling & Logistics, Credentialing, Leadership, and administrative teams. Promote IEC culture and professional standards. Maintain professional dialogue with the ECLS physician / advanced practice provider.Training : Develop skills through ECLS education modules, wet labs, circuit training; become proficient with Cardiohelp, CentriMag, Spectrum, and Rotaflow systems. Complete bed-side orientation and cross-training to all patient age groups. Demonstrate competency during training and assessments. New specialists will practice under a preceptor and complete basic ECLS competency prior to solo staffing. Conduct ongoing ECLS knowledge assessments to tailor education and training. Complete competencies on one ECLS pump system prior to first solo deployment, and complete competencies on Cardiohelp and at least one other pump variety within three months. Understand VA and VV ECMO differences and cannulation strategies. Understand native cardiac output effects on VV / VA ECMO. Demonstrate circuit checks, respond to alarms, and troubleshoot issues. Recognize and manage oxygenator failure, venous air, and arterial air. Demonstrate safe removal of arterial air and decannulation readiness. Demonstrate how to zero transducers, flush pigtails, and respond to heater / cooler issues. Maintain and verify cannulation safety and decisions in collaboration with the medical team.Clinical Knowledge : Verbalize understanding of native blood flow, coagulation processes, ventilator interactions, sedation and neuromuscular blockade considerations, and cooling strategies.Qualifications : Bachelor's degree preferred; an Associate degree with 2-3 years of related Critical Care and / or ECLS experience will be considered in lieu. Maintain unencumbered professional licenses (RN, RRT, CCP). For RNs, a Nurse Compact license may be maintained for travelers; state licenses may be required. For RRTs and CCPs, keep requested state licenses current. Maintain advanced credentials and BLS within AHA credentials.Physical Requirements
