Staff Civil Engineer – Field-Based (Water / Wastewater Projects – Chicago Region)
Location : Greater Chicago Area (travel required across region)
Start Date : Early 2026 (flexibility for earlier start on temporary project)
Employment Type : Full-Time

Key Requirements :
- Bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited program in Civil Engineering (required)
- EIT certification required, PE preferred
- Significant experience in water main and / or sewer main construction
- Strong soft skills : must communicate effectively with multiple stakeholders
- Resident engineering role : field-based, onsite daily, home each night
- Must be comfortable with construction observation, monitoring, and documentation
A leading engineering firm with a strong presence in the Great Lakes region is seeking a Staff Civil Engineer to support high-profile water infrastructure projects across northeast Illinois. This role is part of a growing team focused on stormwater, wastewater, and drinking water systems.
You’ll be placed on one of three major projects based on your experience :
Joliet Drinking Water ProjectCity of Chicago Sewer Water ProjectChicago Water Transmission ProgramResponsibilities :
Perform field investigations, inspections, and assessmentsDocument daily construction activities and generate field reportsMonitor contractor compliance with plans, specs, and safety standardsCoordinate with designers on RFIs, shop drawings, and change ordersCommunicate regularly with Project Managers and Section ManagersInterface with clients and ensure project alignmentSupport office-based tasks during project downtimeQualifications :
2–3+ years of civil engineering experience (consulting preferred)Strong knowledge of civil engineering techniques and construction standardsProficiency in Microsoft Office and civil design software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, etc.)Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
