Job Title : Grounds Maintenance Worker
The City of Vero Beach is seeking a full-time Grounds Maintenance Worker. The position offers a salary of $22.59 hourly and is located in Vero Beach, FL.
Primary Functions
Under close supervision, mows parks and roadways, maintains park landscapes and performs related grounds maintenance tasks throughout the City; and performs related duties as assigned.
Principal Responsibilities
The following duties have been provided as examples of the essential types of work performed by positions within this job classification. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.
- Drives to work sites, mows parks and public right-of-ways.
- Performs a variety of parks or grounds maintenance duties including, but not limited to planting, weeding, mowing, pruning, tree or hedge trimming, tree removal, edging, trash pick up and disposal, plant removal, application of fertilizer, insecticides or herbicides and watering.
- May be required to check and restock restrooms when park attendant absent.
- Collects and disposes of leaves, dirt, rubbish and refuse from all City properties
- Applies fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides, mulch and sand, as directed.
- Follows standard operating procedures and observes safety practices, including assisting in maintenance of traffic.
- May be required to participate in the Florida Wildlife Commission Marine Turtle Nest monitoring program.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
Knowledge of groundskeeping practices and procedures including the proper use of tools and equipment.Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices applicable to groundskeeping work.Ability to safely operate assigned vehicles, hand tools and equipment.Ability to follow written and oral instructions.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the general public.Ability to communicate effectively.Ability to assist in maintenance of traffic.Other Job Characteristics :
Exposure to potential physical harm, infectious disease, extreme weather conditions and hazardous chemicals.Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time in good and bad weather.Ability to lift and carry heavy or bulky items frequently up to 100 lbs.Performs all other related work as may be required.Must be able to wear PPE required to perform the essential functions of the job.Tools and Equipment :
City vehicles, including pick-up, dump truck, van, water truck, tractors, mowers, blower, edger, chain saw, string trimmer and common hand tools.Education, Experience, Licenses, Certifications
Education and Experience : One year of grounds maintenance or other related experience in, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Licenses / Certifications : Possession of a valid Florida driver's license and obtain FDOT Flagging Certificate within six months of appointment.
