Provide developmental academic advising for new and continuing students using a case management approach. Assist students in defining personal and academic goals, interpreting and understanding placement scores, program curricula and prerequisites, and developing basic skills to register for courses. Lead to ensure that students with disabilities have access to opportunities at the college. The Academic Advisor will refer students to appropriate internal and external resources that foster student success.
Duties and Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To
- Demonstrate strong commitment to student development and success through advocacy, positive attitude, adaptability, approachability, problem solving, and support.
- Provide developmental academic advising to help students clarify personal and academic goals using appropriate theories of student development, human development, and student learning.
- Assist students in interpreting and understanding placement scores, program curricula, and prerequisites.
- Assist students in gaining a basic understanding of the college's registration process and the steps to be completed prior to the start of each semester.
- Maintain current knowledge of the institution's academic programs, curriculum, practices, and academic and student policies.
- Coordinate with other Student Affairs and Academic Affairs areas to ensure accuracy of advising materials distributed to students, faculty, and staff.
- Possess a working knowledge of various types of student financial assistance programs.
- Manage academic advising caseload to promote retention, persistence, and student success through proactive interactions and interventions.
- Assist students in developing an Individualized Academic Plan.
- Monitor student progress through regular meetings, communications, interventions, assessments, and data collection.
- Maintain academic advising records in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Develop and maintain appropriate relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
- Utilize a communication plan to engage the college community in the academic advising process.
- Engage in behaviors that create an inclusive environment in which all people are valued, supported, and respected.
- Participate in professional development opportunities, professional organizations, and college-wide committees.
- Identify, secure, and coordinate appropriate and reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
- Counsel and advise disability students.
- Communicate concerns and provide necessary support and materials for faculty, staff, and other service providers to assist in identifying and developing methods to assist students.
- Establish and maintain referral resources and relationships with external agencies and programs for additional student support services.
- Compile data and create reports about DSS.
- Maintain confidential student counseling contact records and educate faculty, staff, and students in crisis management.
- Maintain documentation required for providing accommodations.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, counseling, social work, or related fields.Minimum of three years of experience in academic advising, admissions, career counseling, or related higher education area is required, or a Master's degree.Excellent communication and time management skills, and the ability to work in a team environment with initiative.Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, email, and database applications including student records management systems and online tools.Knowledge of learning disabilities, hearing impairment, visual impairment, chronic diseases, psychiatric disabilities, and mobility impairments is preferred.Administrative and organizational skills with strong customer service attributes.Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in college student personnel, higher education, counseling psychology, or related discipline is preferred.Knowledge of learning disabilities, hearing impairment, visual impairment, chronic diseases, psychiatric disabilities.Minimum of one relevant leadership experience; community college experience or credential is preferred.Ivy Tech Community College is an accredited, equal opportunity / affirmative action employer.
