Highway Maintenance Supervisor

Residency : Creston, Greenfield, and Mt. Ayr Maintenance Garages - Within five (5) months, employees are required to reside within 45 minutes driving time, during normal conditions, from assigned road in your area of responsibility.

Shift : 7 : 00 AM to 3 : 30 PM, Sunday through Friday. Hours may vary and the position is subject to be on call 24 hours a day during emergency and / or weather conditions. Some overnight travel may be required.

As a Highway Maintenance Supervisor, you will have the opportunity to plan and support maintenance activities of all primary roads assigned to the Creston, Greenfield, and Mt. Ayr Maintenance Garages. Some of your responsibilities will be supporting roadway maintenance crews on approximately 547 lane miles of primary highway, that includes US-169, US-34, IA-2, IA-25, IA-148, and IA-92 routes across the assigned area. Other duties may include :

  • Managing and communicating daily maintenance and administrative operations
  • Engaging and mentoring employees to support team success
  • Recommending trainings and monitoring performance of all personnel
  • Supervising the maintenance, upkeep, and security of assigned buildings, grounds, equipment and materials
  • Allocating resources during emergencies and winter operations
  • Serving as the primary contact to other agencies and determine work needs during emergencies
  • Monitoring, inspecting, and documenting conditions of roadways to identify needs
  • Preparing project plans within budgetary limitations
  • Overseeing traffic control for Maintenance activities
  • Using DOT technical devices and software applications

    Special Requirements :

  • A CDL permit upon hire.
  • Class A and endorsements / restrictions on your CDL within 5 months following your hire date.
  • A successful U.S. DOT Clearinghouse query.
  • A pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
  • A pre-employment drug screen and will be required ongoing participation in random drug and alcohol testing programs.

    Minimum Qualification Requirements :

    Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification :

  • Eight years of full-time work experience in highway maintenance, highway construction, highway materials inspection, or as an automotive / heavy equipment / diesel mechanic.
  • All of the following (a and b) :
  • Four years of full-time work experience in highway maintenance, highway construction, highway materials inspection, or as an automotive / heavy equipment / diesel mechanic; and

  • A total of four years of education and / or full-time experience (as described in part a), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in business administration, construction technology / management, or engineering equals one year of full-time experience. Graduation from the Iowa Certified Public Manager Program is also equivalent to one year of full-time experience or education.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Construction Technician Supervisor.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes three years of full-time work as a Garage Operations Assistant or Highway Technician Senior.
  • Additional Qualification Requirements :

  • Positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained to continue employment.
  • In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382), this job requires a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Travel, including overnight travel, may be required for positions in this class. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.
  • Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, employees in designated positions are required to reside within a defined driving time, during normal conditions, from the assigned work location.
  • Employees must respond to emergency situations as required.
