Career Development Specialist

Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, founded in 1967, is the nation’s first community development corporation nestled in the heart of Central Brooklyn in Bed-Stuy. Located at Restoration Plaza, a 300,000 square foot commercial complex that offers a mix of retail, dining, recreation and entertainment, this historic organization is steeped in its mission to close the racial wealth gap. We provide direct services across an economic mobility platform centered on workforce development, affordable housing / homeownership, community revitalization, small business development and arts and culture to 60,000 people annually.

About the Role

The  Career Development Specialist (CDS) reports to the Manager of Workforce Development and plays a key role in supporting participants’ long-term career success and economic mobility. The goal is not only to help members secure employment but also to ensure they thrive, grow, and advance in their careers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the main point of contact for participants to support their career growth, professional development, and financial goals.
  • Provide one-on-one coaching and goal-setting sessions to help low-income individuals achieve economic mobility.
  • Conduct comprehensive career assessments, create individualized service plans, and track participant progress.
  • Deliver high-quality, individualized career coaching and counseling, including :

Job readiness assessments

  • Resume and cover letter development
  • Interview preparation and practice
  • Workplace culture and employer expectations
  • Job retention and career advancement support
  • Provide access to education and job training resources, including vocational programs, HiSET, and college certification opportunities.
  • Plan, facilitate, and conduct job-readiness and career development workshops.
  • Track participant information, milestones, and outcomes using Restoration’s Database, Outcomes, and other tracking systems.
  • Stay informed about best practices in career development and coaching for economic mobility.
  • Provide weekly reports to the Employment Coordinator summarizing activities and outcomes.
  • Work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • What you bring to the role

  • Proven experience promoting career development and advancement, with knowledge of workforce development, education, and career exploration.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage, assess, motivate, and support participants through the job search and placement process using a compassionate, strengths-based, and non-judgmental coaching approach.
  • High degree of cultural sensitivity and ability to work effectively with families from diverse socio-economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Experience supporting populations who have experienced trauma and / or crises preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Mail) and basic office software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including grammar, editing, and proofreading.
  • Demonstrated commitment to high-quality customer service delivery to members, employers, and partner organizations.
  • Experience in workforce development, with a focus on job placement and retention using a strengths-based approach.
  • High level of emotional intelligence; ability to navigate member readiness for employment and provide appropriate coaching or training.
  • Bachelor’s Degree with at least 1 year of workforce development experience, or high school diploma with 3+ years of workforce development or customer service experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
  • Bilingual (Spanish / English) preferred but not required.
  • Hourly Range : $ 27.47
