Your day as a Health Inspector

As a Full-Time Health Inspector with the City of Pharr, you will play a vital role in ensuring public health and safety through diligent inspections of food establishments, public pools, schools, and various regulated facilities. Your responsibilities will include conducting routine and follow-up inspections to enforce compliance with health and sanitation codes, utilizing your knowledge of Texas Food Establishment Rules and local ordinances. You will investigate complaints related to foodborne illnesses and unsanitary conditions, while also providing education to business owners and the public on best practices in food safety.

Collaboration with regional agencies and the Texas Department of State Health Services will be crucial for joint investigations. Additionally, you will maintain organized inspection reports and participate in community outreach to promote health awareness. This position demands reliability, tact, and professionalism, as you handle sensitive public interactions and assist in emergency response situations.

Requirements for this Health Inspector job

To excel as a Full-Time Health Inspector with the City of Pharr, candidates must possess a strong foundation in environmental health or food service management, with preference given to those with relevant experience in these fields. A High School Diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma is required, along with the ability to obtain a Certified Professional Food Manager certification within three months of hire and a Certified Professional - Food Safety (CP-FS) certification within six months of employment. Successful inspectors must demonstrate strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to apply health regulations effectively. Additionally, possessing a valid Texas Class C driver’s license and maintaining an acceptable driving record is essential. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred, enabling effective communication with diverse community members.

A proactive approach, excellent interpersonal skills, and a commitment to public health are fundamental for success in this role.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are :

  • Knowledge of environmental health principles, sanitation standards, and applicable local, state, and federal health codes.
  • Knowledge of food safety, public sanitation, vector control, and communicable disease prevention.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable state and city ordinances, policies, and inspection procedures.
  • Ability to analyze situations accurately and propose solutions or remedies that ensure
  • Skill in conducting inspections and preparing clear, concise reports.
  • Ability to de-escalate and maintain composure and professionalism during enforcement or tense conflict situations with members of the public.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English and Spanish language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
