Responsibilities :
The Recreation / Activities Aide is responsible for enhancing the quality of life for residents by planning and delivering engaging activities that support their physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being.
Key duties include :
Plan and Implement Activities : Assist in developing and executing recreational and therapeutic activities tailored to residents’ needs, including games, crafts, music, gardening, seasonal decorating, baking, and exercise programs. Provide spiritual support for residents of all cultures and beliefs.
Resident Engagement and Support : Foster a positive environment by encouraging participation, offering emotional support, and ensuring adherence to all safety procedures. Demonstrate patience, enthusiasm, and problem-solving skills to overcome barriers to engagement.
Physical and Mental Requirements : Must be able to stand and walk for long periods throughout the workday, with intermittent periods of carrying, reaching, grasping, pushing, pulling, twisting and bending necessary to carry out duties of job. Light to medium work, with frequent lifting / carrying of objects weighing from 10 to 25 pounds. Demonstrate emotional stability. Able to mentally react quickly to clients’ needs during activity sessions. Able to work with residents that may carry infectious diseases.
Record Keeping : Maintain proper documentation, compliant with state and federal regulations including participation, attendance, and resident feedback. Complete required initial, quarterly, annual assessments, MDS, Care Plans and progress notes. Participate in Interdisciplinary Care Plan meetings, contributing to the writing and implementation of individualized care plans.
Collaboration : Work closely with staff members, healthcare professionals, families, and outside vendors to provide entertainment, coordinate events, and create a supportive community atmosphere.
Working Conditions : Indoors in adequate work space and lighting but with fluctuations in temperature and ventilation. Outdoors with average exposure to noise, stress, and disruptions. Subject to working different shifts as programming and needs of residents requires.
Transportation Assistance : Help arrange transportation for residents to and from activities, ensuring comfort and safety.
Additional Duties : Handle errands, distribute resident mail, assist with flower arranging, support special meal events, and help maintain activity spaces in a clean, safe, and inviting manner, act as resident advocate when needed, attend trainings and in services as required, serve on committees as requested.
Professional Representation : Project a positive image of the organization when interacting with residents, families, visitors, and co-workers.
Qualifications :
High school diploma or equivalent required; degree in Therapeutic Recreation or a related field preferred
Previous experience in a geriatric, long-term care, educational, recreational or other related setting.
1–3 years of related experience preferred
Experience working with residents with cognitive impairment or Dementia
Strong organizational, communication (written and oral), and interpersonal skills
Creativity and enthusiasm for planning and leading meaningful activities in both small and large groups; public speaking ability.
Ability to brainstorm with other professionals and adapt activities to meet resident needs
Strong problem-solving abilities with flexibility to adjust to changing situations and the ability to work independently with occasional instruction and some supervision from Director.
Comfort in coordinating with outside vendors and adhering to budgetary guidelines
Professional documentation and communication skills
Demonstrate personal qualities of being organized, caring, energetic, patient, compassionate, supportive, dependable, and team-oriented and with a positive attitude.
