Police Officer Position
Performs and provides police services to the public with a commitment to the primary goals of protection of life, property, and maintenance of order. Protects the rights of all individuals. Performs limited administrative, supervisory, and leadership duties as assigned.
Distinguishing features of the class include participation in crime prevention activities, the arrest, apprehension, and prosecution of offenders, recovery of stolen and missing property, assistance to the sick and injured, enforcement of noncriminal ordinances, and engagement in building community relationships and partnerships. An employee in this class effectively manages time and prioritizes efforts. The employee utilizes discretion in selecting the best solution to the problem at hand and handles situations appropriately through effective communication, mediation, and interpersonal skills. The employee interacts with citizens and coworkers for input and feedback to meet specific goals and objectives.
The employee is subject to hazards associated with law enforcement including work in unpredictable environments, extreme weather, and exposure to various hazards such as dangerous persons, loud noises, hazardous material spills with fumes, oils, gasses, or flammable liquids. As with any other police officer, the risk of exposure to infectious diseases and hazards includes exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Work is performed under general supervision. Work is evaluated in accordance with Town of Davidson policies, Department policies and procedures, local, state, and federal laws and ordinances, and directives or orders from superior officers.
Competencies include integrity, commitment to serve the public, flexibility, initiative, good judgment, and the ability to identify problems, analyze cause, and develop solutions. The Police Officer demonstrates good planning, time management, and organizing capabilities. The Police Officer shall be responsible and accountable for the quality, quantity, efficiency, and effectiveness of the work to be accomplished.
Duties and responsibilities include conducting patrols, responding to calls for service, assisting in the apprehension and arrest of law violators, conducting investigations, preparing reports, enforcing laws, and performing other related duties as required.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of relevant laws, law enforcement principles, public speaking, writing, conflict resolution, and the ability to act with sound judgment and prepare clear reports.
Physical requirements include sitting, walking / running, lifting / carrying, handling, fine dexterity, vision, hearing / talking, foot controls, running, standing, pushing / pulling / reaching, and kneeling / crouching / crawling / twisting / bending.
Desirable education and experience include a high school diploma or equivalent, certification as a Police Officer, and preference for candidates with college credit or degree and Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certification.
Special requirements include possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license and BLET certification before assignment to sworn duties.
