Job Description
The Clinical Radiation Oncology Nurse works within general ONS methods and procedures and exercises considerable independent judgment to adapt and apply the guidelines to specific situations. The work requires knowledge of the policies, procedures, regulations and scope of nursing work. The nurse utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach to care working with other staff of the center including physicians, radiation therapists, physics, authorizations, and front desk.
The Radiation Oncology Nurse’s primary responsibilities include clinical nurse activities which assure physician support and radiation oncology patient needs are completely met. This includes IV insertion, fiducial hydrogel procedures, laryngoscopy, ancillary services referrals, and assures nursing medical records are maintained according to regulatory requirement, best practice and center policy.
The Radiation Oncology Nurse is actively involved and assists in clinical research at the center working
closely with the research team. The Radiation Oncology Nurse also participates in the following
committees : Quality Council, Research, Infection Control, Pharmacy Program and assures safety
measures and compliance are adhered to at all times.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Provide professional nursing care to patients within the scope of practice.
Assess the physical and psychosocial status of clients by means of interview, health history,
physical examination, and diagnostic studies.
Assist the physician with examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatments when appropriate.
Coordinate / order prescribed diagnostic testing to evaluate the treatment of patient.
Document and record all activities / interventions, patient / family responses, medication dispensed / prescribed etc., in each patient medical chart whether paper or EMR.
Provide educational material and communicate physician advice and instructions to the patient.
Develop and document a plan of care that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes with physician approval and support.
Determine a physician approved care plan from assessment data, individualized to each patient according to condition or need.
Demonstrates a clear understanding of quality improvement and patient satisfaction, while actively improving each process / procedure.
Adhere to infection control, safety guidelines and confidentiality policies.
Assess additional needs of patient such as transportation assistance, nutritional counseling, and physio-social support.
Communicate and report any patient problems encountered during the weekly staff meetings.
Contribute to the professional development of peers, and colleagues by sharing knowledge and skills.
Establish and maintain positive working relationships with patient, family, team members, physicians, and other staff.
Observe all safety and health regulations, ensure compliance of State and Federal regulations and perform work in accordance with medical facility policies and procedures.
Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Qualifications
New Jersey State License as Registered Nurse
BSN required
Radiation Oncology Certification required; OCN Certification preferred
BLS certified
3+ years’ experience in Radiation Oncology preferred
