The Assistant Director manages the planning, organizing, and directing of the Sun Devil Fitness and Wellness department and supervises respective professional and student staff at the specified location.

The position focuses on student development, strategic planning, and creating new engagement opportunities for student success.

This position works primarily on the ASU Polytechnic campus, and serves as a member of the university-wide Sun Devil Fitness and Wellness management team in support of all campus locations.

Essential Duties

Essential Duties :

  • Oversees all elements of the Sun Devil Fitness and Wellness that serves the local campus community, including delivery of effective programs, management and oversight of facility operations, and staffing (full-time and part-time).
  • Directly supervise 3 full-time staff members who oversee sports programs, aquatics, safety education, marketing, fitness, and facility operations.
  • Create and manage a student wage budget, operational budget, programming budget and kids camp budget for the location.
  • Supervise the coordination of student staff across all departments including facilities, sports programs, fitness, aquatics, safety education, and marketing.

Responsibilities include recruitment, training, and performance evaluations of all student staff members.

  • Collaboration with the Dean of Students office on engagement programs focusing on community within the campus, in addition to coordinating efforts with Housing and academic colleges.
  • Provide facility support for the physical education classes and sports teams for the ASU Poly Prep Charter School at the Polytechnic campus.
  • Supervise the daily operations of a summer childrens camp.
  • Assist in the strategic planning process working directly with SDFW leadership and Dean of Students for the location.
  • Create dynamic and unique programming that promotes student community and meets the changing needs of the ASU student body.
  • Uphold program and facility protocol consistently and ensure adherence to risk management practices.
  • Perform program assessments and evaluations to determine the ongoing needs of students at the location.
  • Maintain flexibility by utilizing critical thinking and independent problem-solving.
  • Cultivate an inclusive environment for student participants and staff.
  • Perform other duties as specified.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND six years of related administrative experience, which includes three years of supervisory experience;

OR, Ten years of related administrative experience, which includes three years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and / or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Experience as a team-oriented leader, able to effectively manage complex situations involving numerous and sometimes competing priorities, comfortable working in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment.
  • Experience managing and developing professional and student employees.
  • Experience initiating collaborations with university and community partnerships.
  • Experience with student leadership development in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working in summer kids camps or working with youth programs
  • Proficiency in problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Experience of strong organizational skills and proficiency in project management.
  • Evidence of effective written, interpersonal, oral and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience maintaining effective working relationships, presenting to audiences, public speaking, analyzing problems, proposing effective solutions, and effectively delegating responsibilities to staff.
  • Experience meeting priority deadlines while providing accurate and excellent services.
  • Masters Degree preferred in Recreation, Physical Education or related field.

Educational Outreach and Student Services (EOSS) is committed to enrolling all qualified students at Arizona State University and assisting them in their academic success.
