At Houston Methodist, the Senior Medical Assistant Certified (Sr. MA) position functions as an expert with highly competent knowledge in technical and advanced examinations and treatments. Under the direct supervision of a Physician and / or Registered Nurse, the Sr. MA provides high-quality support of patient care and services for assigned patient populations. This role oversees appropriate scope of practice (e.g., Hand Hygiene Validator, EMR super-user). The Sr. MA assists with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatments, and dressing changes. It also performs general administrative duties in accordance with CLIA, HIPAA, NCQA, government standards, and company policies and procedures. The Sr. MA participates in patient care under the direction of a physician and within the scope of a medical assistant. The role may schedule patient appointments, ensure medical necessity compliance, and verify eligibility for care. Other duties include serving as a preceptor and clinical resource to Medical Assistants, training and orienting others as appropriate.

Service Essential Functions
Provides care to patients visiting the clinic under the direct supervision of a Physician, Registered Nurse, or clinic leadership. Completes pre-visit planning workflow prior to visit, including documentation. Anticipates the needs of the specific patient population in collaboration with the provider team.Communicates with patients, obtains and documents vital signs, chief complaints, medications review, and medical / social history as appropriate. Documents care, diagnostic measurements, and procedures in the EMR in accordance with policies and procedures.Follows up with patients to ensure compliance with recommendations, medications, lab / x-ray results, and follow-up visits. Supports activation of MyChart as appropriate.Provides care coordination with hospital, ED, consulting physicians, and community resources as appropriate, including handling patient inquiries.Role models behaviors and skills to improve department scores for patient satisfaction through peer-to-peer accountability.Quality / Safety Essential Functions
Reports observations and problems to the physician and / or nurse. Recognizes abnormal clinical findings and reports them appropriately. Maintains patient privacy and safety.Performs routine tests on patients (e.g., EKG, rapid strep, urinalysis, pregnancy tests).Sterilizes instruments and equipment; prepares, cleans, and maintains exam and treatment rooms, supplies, and equipment.Finance Essential Functions
Uses resources efficiently; stocks exam rooms, takes inventory, and orders supplies.Manages time effectively, prioritizes daily tasks, and coordinates with colleagues to meet department demands.Growth / Innovation Essential Functions

Education
High School diploma or equivalent (GED, homeschool equivalency, partial or full post-secondary education, etc.).Work Experience
Five years medical assistant experience with highly complex, chronic disease management or in a specialty discipline.Licenses And Certifications - Required
Certified Medical Assistant through AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, NHA or Registered Medical Assistant or EMT. AndBLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA).Licenses And Certifications - Preferred
CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification.Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Proficient in performing assigned job tasks with ongoing competency assessments.Clear spoken, written, and reading English to perform essential functions and ensure safety.Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers with a customer service focus.Knowledge of medical practice, patient care, examinations, diagnostics, treatment procedures, equipment and instruments.Ability to maintain clinical quality assurance and accurate medical records.Strong problem solving, reasoning, and judgment; compassionate, patient-centered care.Proficient computer skills for documentation and work-related purposes; complete required ongoing training and certifications.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff, and the public; work well in a team.Understanding of the patient population in relation to clinical disease processes.Supplemental Requirements
