The Division :

  • The Division of Virginia State Parks fulfills its mission to conserve the natural, scenic, historic and cultural resources of the Commonwealth and provide recreational and educational opportunities consistent with the good stewardship of these lands, waters and facilities that leaves them unimpaired for future generations by operating a system of 42 state parks that encompass over 75,000 acres;
  • over 1200 buildings, almost 1700 campsites; over 300 cabins; over 700 miles of trails; nearly 500 miles of shoreline; 36 lakes and ponds;

11 swimming beaches; 4 international dark sky sites, and offers over 20,000 educational programs and workshops each year.

  • Managed by a full-time staff of 275 and a wage staff of 1000+ during the prime season, Virginia’s award-winning state park system boasts an incredible and diverse array of natural, cultural, historical and recreational resources;
  • including parks in the mountains; on the ocean; on the Chesapeake Bay; on 8 major rivers; on 4 major lakes; 4 rail trails;

and 3 battlefield sites, and 32 sites listed on the National Historic Registry. Since 1936, Virginia's Law Enforcement Rangers have protected and preserved the lives and property of our citizens and their guests while protecting the commonwealth’s irreplaceable natural and cultural resources.

Throughout their history, these law enforcement professionals have practiced community policing in state parks and natural areas while they provide comfort and peace of mind to outdoor enthusiasts.

The mission of the Public Safety and Law Enforcement Staff is : Preserving the Past Protecting the Future.

Work Unit :

The main office for the Public Safety and Law Enforcement Staff is located in Richmond, Virginia. This position will work out of the Public Safety & Law Enforcement Offices at Natural Bridge State Park.

Operational requirements may span throughout the Commonwealth and will require travel.

The Opportunity :

Operating at the direction and oversight of the Deputy Chief of Public Safety and Law Enforcement, or designee, the primary purpose of this position is to : Plan, organize and coordinate administrative operations and equipment utilized by the Public Safety & Law Enforcement Staff.

Acting as a coordinator for law enforcement equipment and providing administrative support to the Public Safety & Law Enforcement operations, this specialist will be responsible for the repair, procurement, maintenance, tracking, inventorying and issuing of equipment managed by the Public Safety and Law Enforcement Staff.

The main office for the Public Safety & Law Enforcement Staff is located in Richmond, Virginia. However, the Firearms Training Specialist will be assigned to the Public Safety & Law Enforcement Office at Natural Bridge State Park.

Additionally, as warranted, this position may also support public safety and law enforcement operations. The position will require travel in an agency-owned / leased vehicle and occasional overnight stays.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to organize and conduct an ongoing inventory or experience in recordkeeping.
  • Experience providing highest standard of customer service to the public and co-workers in a professional, courteous manner.
  • Attention to detail in order to memorize and recall information.
  • Required to operate a computer including Microsoft Office applications.

Additional Considerations

  • Familiarity with law enforcement equipment including communications equipment, uniforms, and related law enforcement gear.
  • Familiarity with procurement.
  • Current DCJS certified law enforcement officer.
  • Sworn Law Enforcement Officer.
