Paraprofessionals provide support to our schools and teachers in a variety of roles. A paraprofessional is a vital member of the school team and familiar with District initiatives including but not limited to The Cleveland Plan, Academic Achievement Plans, as well as the mission of their school.
Paraprofessionals also adapt to the individual social emotional and academic needs of their students. Specific job duties will vary depending on the paraprofessional position.
After applying to be a paraprofessional with CMSD, you will be screened to determine which position is best for you and which positions you would like to be considered for.
Educational Aide
Provides assistance in regular education classrooms in instruction, instructional materials, student records and classroom environment.
- Paraprofessionals must meet one of the following to be qualified : Associates Degree or a minimum of 48 semester hours or 72 quarter hours or successfully passing the Para Pro Assessment
- High school diploma or GED required; a Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) required or obtained within two years of hire
- Possess or be eligible for an Ohio Educational Aide Permit required
- A minimum of two years successful experience working with children preferred
- Knowledge of basic good nutrition habits preferred
- Prior experience working with students in an urban desegregated educational environment
Instructional Assistant
Provides assistance with handling the unique needs of disabled and handicapped Special Education students. Areas of involvement may include providing considerable physical support and control of students as well as assisting with instruction in speech, hearing, sight, etc.
- Paraprofessionals must meet one of the following to be qualified : Associates Degree or a minimum of 48 semester hours or 72 quarter hours or successfully passing the Para Pro Assessment
- Possess or be eligible for an Ohio Educational Aide Permit required
- Desire to serve the school and community
- Ability to physically manage handicapped students
- Experience working with handicapped students preferred
- State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) Certification preferred
- Valid Ohio Educational Aide Permit
- Successfully passed a formal State or local academic assessment, specifically, the Parapro Assessment or the Para Educator network
Paraprofessional-PCIA
The Planning Center Instructional Aide (PCIA) is an important part of maintaining school discipline. The Planning Center program keeps students in school and on task while being removed from his / her regular placement and provides support and intervention for students, teachers and families.
In addition to accurate record keeping, the PCIA will utilize intervention techniques to positively impact student behavior
- Paraprofessionals must meet one of the following to be qualified : Associates Degree or a minimum of 48 semester hours or 72 quarter hours or successfully passing the Para Pro Assessment
- Prior experience working with students in an in-school suspension classroom preferred
- A minimum of two years successful experience working with children and adolescents
- Current CMSD paraprofessional preferred
- Received or eligible to receive a valid Ohio Educational Aide Permit
- Successfully passed a formal State or local academic assessment, specifically, the Parapro Assessment or the Para Educator network
