Description : Job Summary : The Coding Trainer / Auditor works in Health Information Management Operations under direct supervision of the Coding Manager.
This position is chiefly responsible for ensuring coders and vendors of all specialties are performing their job to the highest accuracy and compliance possible.
This includes auditing work done by the HIM Operations coders and vendors that are contracted to provide additional coding support and providing education as needed.
This position is also responsible for communicating with physicians on a regular basis related to their documentation as it pertains to coding.
In addition to this coding support, the Trainer / Auditor is also responsible for ensuring all coding guidelines are compliant and updated and for working all exceptions in Epic work queues that may be related to coding questions, errors or charts that the coders are unable to code for various reasons.
This is a strategic position that requires the individual to apply lean concepts to ensure the coders are as productive and accurate as possible.
This position will also be responsible for various project management tasks related to implementation of new services and other changes in coding processes.
This position is also going to be primarily responsible for educating the coders in preparation for ICD-10 and educating the physicians related to their documentation for ICD-10.
Essential Responsibilities : Education and Training : Identifies improvement and educational opportunities related to coding, billing and compliance.
Plans and delivers education to applicable staff. Monitors improvement and reports results to leaders. Trains new staff and / or vendors on coding and business processes.
Work with providers to ensure documentation meets standards for coding. May serve as the coding subject matter expert for specific departments or specialties.
Coding Guidelines and Compliance : Compile and maintains coding guidelines and reference manuals for coding staff and vendors to ensure accuracy in coding based on relevant CMS guidelines and CCI edits.
Works with coders and / or vendors to ensure standard work based on guidelines is being followed. Communicates changes to staff and / or vendors and reviews coding to ensure standards are met.
Participates in continuing education to promote professional growth and expertise within discipline.Coding Exceptions / Work Queues : Monitors work queues for errors and exceptions from coding and vendor staff.
Work all exceptions / holds that coders are unable to code. Work with providers and staff to clear these exceptions and send through to billing.
Business Systems Liaison : Develops and understanding of numerous applications and systems used in HIM and serves as the subject matter expert for the flow of information between systems upstream and downstream of coding processes.
Assists with troubleshooting failures between systems. May lead or be involved in projects related to this function. Serves as the coding expert for specific questions and concerns related to systems and applications used for coding.
Analytical and Reporting Support : Provides routine and ad hoc reports from data or vendor systems to leadership. Works with leadership to understand data requests and provide relevant information to support business objectives.
Basic Qualifications : Experience Minimum three (3) years of experience coding records and / or providing coding education and training for HIM staff understanding clinical and hospital health records.
Education Associates degree in Health Information Management or a related field. License, Certification, Registration Certified Coding Specialist required at hire OR Coding Specialist Certificate - Physician Based required at hire OR Professional Coder Certificate required at hire Additional Requirements : Demonstrated exceptional coding accuracy and prehensive knowledge of coding guidelines including state and federal laws, rules and prehensive knowledge of medical terminology or equivalent recent training or education.
Proficiency in use of multiple computerized data systems including Microsoft Office, 3M, Epic, and other EMRs.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated excellent problem solving and customer service termediate knowledge of biology / anatomy / disease processes, laboratory test and uses, prescription and OTC medications and their rescriptive guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications : Five (5) years of coding quality and hospital compliance experience.RHIT or RHIA by date of hire / transfer.
