At Houston Methodist the Sterile ProcessingCoordinator position will oversee and coordinate the activities ofthe Sterile Processing department and service line as appropriateto include ensuring new employees are properly oriented and trainedmonitoring work flow and volume of the work and reviewing andmaintaining department supply needs.

This position is responsiblefor the monthly schedule and daily shift assignments staffperformance evaluation feedback to the appropriate manager andassists in the development of the departmental budget.

Thisposition is responsible for coordinating the daily activities andpersonnel involved with decontamination inspection assemblypackaging reprocessing and sterilization of instrumentation andassembly of case carts for the unit.

The Sterile ProcessingCoordinator will maintain consistent and continuous workflowbetween the Operating Room (OR) and Sterile Processing and isresponsible for assisting Manager in meeting all regulatoryrequirements for the unit related to these activities.

PEOPLE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Coordinates andassigns based on the acuity level of the Technician processingservices that are efficiently organized. Ensures instruments andsupplies are decontaminated and reprocessed in a timely manner.

Serves as the primary resource for staff in all areas of servicethat the departmentperforms.

Serves as a rolemodel and mentor facilitating teamwork working in conjunction withthe OR staff to provide timely sterile products trays and casecarts where applicable.

Maintains consistent and continuousworkflow between the OR and SterileProcessing.

Communicatesin an active positive and effective manner to all interprofessionalhealth care team members listens and responds to the ideas ofothers.

Coaches staff in effective verbal nonverbal and writtencommunication. Initiates recommendations collaborating withmanagement for improvement of employee engagementscore.

SERVICE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS

Coordinates thedaily interface between sterile processing surgery and materialsmanagement as well as other departments within and outside ofHouston Methodist to ensure that supplies and instruments areavailable as needed for service lines as appropriate.

Partners withSP Liaison to prepare items in advance for the following days ORneeds.

  • Anticipates needsby ensuring that all supplies or instrumentation not routinelyavailable within the department are obtained and ready prior toscheduled surgerycases.
  • Plans and monitorsstaffing levels to ensure appropriate staffing at all times toprovide excellent service. Regulates scheduling and departmentstaff assignments based on the needs of the department.

Providesdaily reporting to management of needs issues to be addressed andall important information necessary to ensure departmentsuccess.

QUALITY / SAFETYESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Servesas the primary quality assurance resource for the departmentthrough periodic set audits. Reviews and revises as appropriatepolicies and procedures which reflect knowledge of industrystandards and recommended practices for sterile processing.

Assuresdepartment performance follows Houston Methodist policies andprocedures and guidelines / standards from pertinent regulatoryagencies.

  • Continuouslyassures the effectiveness of the sterilization process by usinginternal external and biological monitoring systems appropriatelyutilizing established department protocols and sterilizermanufacturers instructions foruse.
  • Ensures accuratetracking of all instrumentation in conjunction with the SP Liaisonfor specific service lines. Maintains and records accuraterecordings of sterile area environment requirements per Associationfor the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) OSHA and / orAssociation of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) guidelines perinstitutionalpolicies.
  • Monitors readsdocuments and interprets all parameters for all types ofsterilizers to ensure proper function ((Steam Ethylene Oxide (ETO)and Low Temperature HydrogenPeroxide)).

FINANCEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Monitorsstaffing levels against budgeted targets and adjusts to meet goals.Keeps management informed and involved as appropriate toproactively address staffing or other employeeissues.
  • Maintains theshifts monthly schedule and daily shift assignments provides inputon staff performance evaluation and assists in the development ofthe department budgetsneeds
  • Collaborates withMaterials Management to identify supply needs and ordering ofnonsterile items in need ofprocessing.

Leads andidentifies opportunities for practice changes and performanceimprovement. Investigates and incorporates evidencebased practiceswhich are presented to shared governance and leadership.

Identifies and assistsdepartment educator in scheduling of necessary inservices fordepartment staff related to new products changes in procedure etc.

Provides oversight for new employee preceptorships. Completes andupdates the My Development Plan on an ongoingbasis.

EDUCATION

HighSchool diploma or equivalent education (examples include : GEDverification of homeschool equivalency partial or full completionof postsecondary education etc.)

WORKEXPERIENCE

Six years ofSterile Processing experience in an acute carehospital

LICENSES ANDCERTIFICATIONSREQUIRED

  • CRCST CertifiedRegistered Central Service Technician (HSPA) OR
  • CSPDT Certified SterileProcessing and Distribution Technician (CBSPD) AND
  • CIS Certified InstrumentSpecialist (HSPA) within 1 year OR
  • CSIS Certified SurgicalInstrument Specialist (CBSPD) within 1 year

KNOWLEDGE SKILLSAND ABILITIES

  • Demonstratesthe skills and competencies necessary to safely perform theassigned job determined through ongoing skills competencyassessments and performanceevaluations
  • Sufficientproficiency in speaking reading and writing the English languagenecessary to perform the essential functions of this job especiallywith regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety orsecurity
