Associate Director of Business Development Cooley is seeking an Associate Director of Business Development to join the Marketing & Business Development team in guiding BD functions on the west coast.

Position summary : The Associate Director (AD) will work closely with the director on overall vision, strategy and goal setting, and will be responsible for the oversight and execution of strategy in a specific region or area of focus.

The AD will foster cross-department collaboration, manage regional project design, budgets and teams, provide regular reporting on progress, manage event strategy in collaboration with marketing, coordinate targeting initiatives, use data to measure results, offer new ideas and insights, and represent the firm in-market with networking activities and targeting.

Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following : Position responsibilities : Play an instrumental role in designing and advancing the overall approach to win new business within a defined region or functionCollaborate closely with practice group, regional and core marketing teamsDevelop a complete understanding of the firm's business, values, strengths and differentiatorsAct as an ambassador for the firm and often represents the first interaction a prospect may have with the firmThoughtfully assess opportunities to advance new client business internally within the primary practice group and adjacent practice groupsAdvise on pursuit strategy for specific target prospective clients in various industries, stages, and geographiesIdentify potential pain points or issues relevant to prospective clients and facilitates solutionsExecute on plans to increase inbound referrals from service providers, external partners (such as banking and consulting groups), incubators, accelerators, universities, influencers, and other friendliesAfter earning the appropriate internal stakeholder buy-in, participate as a team member in pursuit of opportunities from the investment community (including accelerators, incubators, venture capital and private equity firms)Influence stakeholders, including internal and external partners, to achieve desired resultsAssist with cross-regional and cross-divisional strategy as needed, including lead generation, mentoring, feedback, reporting and championing new efforts and / or initiativesParticipates in budget planning and managementVisible and active in both internal and external communitiesManage a team of Business Development (BD) Managers and other roles as needed Contribute to professional development by teaching, coaching and mentoringProvide day-to-day supervision of direct reports, ensure compliance with assigned work hours and monitor for compliance with all firm and department policies.

Manage staffing coverage, review and process time logs / time off requestsSupport professional development and continued educational opportunities for the teamIn collaboration with immediate supervisor and Central HR, participate in hiring, performance appraisals, counseling, termination and other employee lifecycle eventsAll other duties as assigned or requiredSkills and experience : Required : After orientation at Cooley LLP, exhibit proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, iManage and other firm applicationsAbility to work extended and / or weekend hours, as requiredAbility to travel, as required8+ years of applicable experience in the field (preferably with minimum of 3 years senior manager experience) with experience leading othersBachelor's DegreeProven track record of performing elevated responsibilities within the current role providing intrinsic leadership & strategic direction to teamProven success as a sales leader in a professional services business and in leading and supporting new business effortsProven success as an inspiring and effective team leaderPreferred : Supervisory management experienceCompetencies : Highly capable and able to work closely and collaboratively within a teamExcellent verbal / written / interpersonal communication skills in various situations (small / large group, one-on-one)Ability to work well with others and develop professional relationships with department members, attorneys and vendors to inspire their trust and confidenceSelf-motivator with high energy level and enthusiasm towards activities and goalsEntrepreneurial spirit with excellent business acumenAbility to work well under pressure within a deadline-driven environmentExcellent project management and organizational skillsDetail-oriented while multi-taskingStrong customer service skills, ability to work with a variety of personalities internally and externallyCooley offers a competitive compensation and excellent benefits package and is committed to fair and equitable employment practices.

EOE.The expected annual pay range for this position is $200,000 - $290,000. Please note that final offer amount will be dependent on geographic location, applicable experience and skillset of the candidate.
