Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Managing Director of Development, Health Sciences, the Director of Development for the Stritch School of Medicine (SSOM) will set and achieve fundraising goals and metrics for SSOM in addition to personally participating in the qualification, cultivation, and solicitation of major and principal gift prospects with a capacity of $100K-$5M for the Stritch School of Medicine.

The Director will partner with the Dean of SSOM and work closely with faculty, researchers and staff to cultivate, solicit and steward major and principal gifts from alumni and friends in the successful attainment of university priorities and campaign initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage the total range of fundraising activities (qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship) of an assigned portfolio of prospects and donors including directly soliciting and managing the solicitation of principal and major gift prospects.
  • Make a defined number of visits and solicitations per year designed to move prospects toward making a philanthropic commitment to the university.
  • Provide support to the Dean of the SSOM and for the school's volunteer leadership.
  • Write and edit correspondence, proposals, and reports to prospective donors and major / capital campaign gift donors.
  • Prepare contact reports on meetings and interactions with donors and prospects.
  • Coordinate appointments and prepare any required materials for meetings, visits or phone calls with Deans, President, alumni volunteers, or other senior administrators with alumni and friends within prospect pool.

Minimum Education and / or Work Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred.
  • 5-7 years of relevant fundraising experience or sales experience in a complex organization. Preference for demonstrated success in making and closing five- and six-figure gift solicitations from individual donors.

Transferable experience in sales will be given equal consideration.

  • Experience in higher education is a plus.
  • 3-5 years of significant leadership experience.
  • Must have demonstrated, successful track record of donor cultivation and solicitation.
  • Demonstration of 3-5 years of tenure and longevity at previous employers is required, a history of promotions within organizations is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Superb verbal and written communication skills.
  • Prior experience working with staff and volunteers, the ability to manage complex relationships, and proven collaboration and teamwork skills in a diverse community to leverage activities, initiatives, and programs for multiple purposes.
  • Proficiency with fundraising databases and technology.
  • Understanding of the "Moves Management" process or other proven relationship-management process / philosophies and ability to think and work strategically.
  • Willingness to work hours outside the normal working day (i.e. nights and weekends).
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team, establish priorities, and work collaboratively as a member of a diverse community.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and a positive attitude.
  • A proven commitment to diversity, the will to embrace diversity in all aspects of Development.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers.
