Position Summary :

The CFO is the organization's top financial leadership position and serves as a critical strategic business partner to the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), providing thought leadership and oversight in matters pertaining to the financial and economic stability of the Foodbank.

This individual will be responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and implementing the activities related to accounting, accounts payable / receivable, fiscal reporting, debt management, and treasury functions (including cash management, investments, banking relationships, business licensing administration, risk management, insurance, and purchasing).

This position creates and oversees all company financial practices, including Finance Department policies and procedures, preparation of budgets, development of financial reports and tax filings, and management of external / internal audit activities.

The CFO is also responsible for facilitating the strategic budgeting process in partnership with the President and CEO and the Foodbank's Executive Leadership Team, with a particular focus on providing an economic and analytical viewpoint for future planning and longevity purposes.

This position serves as the staff liaison for the Investment & Audit Committee supporting the Treasurer of the Board of Directors.

The CFO will provide leadership, training, and mentorship to the Foodbank's Finance Department, which consists of the CFO, Controller, Senior Accountant, and Accounts Payable Specialist.

Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the CFO will be an integral member of the Foodbank's Executive Leadership Team along with the President and CEO, the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Chief People Officer (CPO), and the Chief Development Officer (CDO).

The successful CFO candidate will bring a track record of success as a senior leader, possess deep and broad financial expertise, demonstrate emotional intelligence, champion collaboration and continuous improvement, and can effectively coach, train, and manage their team.

The successful CFO candidate will also not be afraid to roll up their sleeves and dig in when needed to support their team, by completing critical reports to meet State deadlines, month-end close, annual audits, and other reporting requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Plan, manage, organize, and complete activities related to organizational financial operations including budgeting, forecasting, accounting, government and financial reporting, banking relationship management, purchasing and procurement, risk management and insurance coverage, cash and debt management, and business filings.
  • Develop financial strategies to maximize the use of financial resources, while ensuring the financial vitality and longevity of the St. Louis Area Foodbank.
  • Participate as a member of the Executive Leadership Team in the planning, development, and review of projects, programs, facilities, and investments considered by the Foodbank, assessing alignment of such activities with the strategic direction and the organization's financial resources.
  • Lead the annual budget process incorporating strategic discussions, organizational priorities, and budget manager training.

Ensure the annual budget is compiled with reasonable assumptions and includes a 3-year forecast for board and committee presentation and approval.

  • Analyze budget variances to assess operational effectiveness and recommend changes as appropriate throughout the year.
  • Oversee and lean in with the financial statement close process (monthly and annually) to ensure the accuracy of financial statements.

Ensure general ledger accounts are reconciled monthly, especially for high-risk accounts such as cash, inventory, and revenue.

  • Work cross-functionally with departmental teams to further programmatic, operational and financial initiatives.
  • Prepare and present financial updates at all Foodbank Board of Directors and Investment & Audit Committee meetings.
  • Monitor investment portfolio performance, including our strategic reserves and endowment, to ensure its long-term financial health and viability to achieve the Foodbank's mission and goals.
  • Solicit and evaluate request-for-proposals (RFP) for key vendor contracts to ensure best pricing.
  • Coordinate the annual financial statement and federal funds audit process as well as the compilation and filing of Form 990 with an independent audit firm.
  • Ensure organizational compliance with all applicable local, state (Missouri and Illinois), and federal laws and filings.
  • Oversee, learn, and monitor all Government programs for Missouri and Illinois and ensure compliance, on-time completion of all reporting, and tracking of all funds received and expended.
  • Provide coaching, training, and mentoring to team members at all levels and to all teams across the organization to support a high-performing culture.
  • Serve as a role model for integrity and the Foodbank's core values (Stewardship, Team, Agility, and Respect).
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet organizational needs.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Accounting, Finance or related field required. Master's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field a plus.
  • CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive, senior-level experience in financial management. Non-profit senior leadership experience as well as past Chief / Executive-level experience are highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with long-range strategic financial and facilities planning required.
  • Knowledge of federal grants management and regulations for non-profit organizations preferred.
  • Food banking / food industry experience a plus.
  • Experience and knowledge of inventory tracking and reconciliation required.
  • Advanced computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) as well as financial and payroll reporting software.
  • Must pass pre-employment criminal background check and drug testing.

Work Schedule :

  • Monday - Friday onsite at the SLAFB facility and in the community as needed.
  • However, flexibility will be granted as appropriate in accordance with the SLAFB's Remote Work / Working From Home Policy.
  • Occasional weekend (Saturday / Sunday) or evening hours may be required.
  • Meeting attendance may require overnight travel.
