Teacher of the Visually Impaired
AB Staffing is looking for an experienced Teacher of the Visually Impaired that is available for the 2024 / 2025 school year.
Requirements :
- WA Teaching Certification with Teacher of the Visually Impaired and Orientation & Mobility Specialist endorsement
- Bachelor’s or master’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
- Experience with school aged children, Expanded Core Curriculum, and children with multiple impairments, preferred.
- Must possess strong communication and organizational skills.
- Must demonstrate initiative and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Must have the ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time; see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids;
- hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person and on the telephone;
and the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; May include frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting up to approximately 25 pounds and occasional lifting of equipment and / or materials weighing up to approximately 40 pounds may be required.
Job Description :
- Title / Position : Teacher, Visually Impaired Itinerant Program
- Caseload and details of position / classroom type will differ based on school location

- Contract through the 2024 / 2025 school year 35 to 40 hours per week
- Contract follows the academic district calendar
Key Responsibilities :
- Perform functional vision and learning media assessments on new referrals and three-year re-evaluations. Recommend appropriate specialized evaluations as needed, such as low vision, orientation and mobility, psycho-social, and adaptive physical education.
- Perform orientation and mobility assessments on new referrals and three-year re-evaluations. Develop age-appropriate IEP goals for safe and independent travel, obtaining appropriate equipment (cane) to support the goals.
- Contribute to the development of the IEP with goals, modifications, learning styles, and transition plans as needed, including adapting job related experiences.
- Prepare documentation and team assessments to attend IEP meetings to communicate with staff, parents, and students about updates for progress of goals.
- Consult with related staff (physical therapists, occupational therapists and adapted physical education teachers) concerning appropriate evaluation, instructional strategies and accommodations to foster motor development.
- Assist in determining and procuring classroom equipment and materials necessary for the student with visual impairments to learn (Brailler, low vision devices, and specialized assistive technology) including ensuring necessary room modifications and lighting changes.
- Monitoring the students’ progress in academic subjects and providing instruction in compensatory skills as needed in the areas the students may have difficulty with as a result of the visual impairment.
- Provide instruction to promote listening skills, visual efficiency, concept development, career readiness, leisure and recreation skills, social skills, organization and study skills, and self-advocacy.
- Participates in professional growth activities such as conferences, classes, staff meetings and visitations.
Salary :
- Starting at $55 / hr.
- $1,925 to $2,200 / week on 35-40 hours
