Position Overview

The Linac Coherent Light Source-II High Energy Project is an upgrade to the continuous-wave (CW) superconducting electron linear accelerator and hard x-ray free electron laser (FEL) now under construction at SLAC.

This project will double the electron energy of the accelerator from 4 to 8 GeV in order to extend the tuning range of the FEL from 5 to 20 keV.

The project will also enhance the LCLS hard x-ray instrumentation suite to make use of the enhanced tuning range of the FEL.

We are seeking a scientist or engineer, with technical and managerial qualifications to serve as the Technical Project Manager / Cost Account Managers (CAM) to lead the design, production, and installation of multiple accelerator subsystems within the LCLS-II-HE Project.

The successful candidate will collaboratively work with the lead engineers, designers, and technical experts in the design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning of the components.

He / she will have specific responsibility for achieving the cost, schedule, and technical performance goals of their systems.

The Technical Project Manager / CAM is responsible for defining the interfaces and managing conflicts to other systems within the project and at SLAC.

Integrating each section of the machine requires good coordination with other Technical Project Managers and the system managers within the project, SLAC technical divisions, and the design / production teams at partner labs, when applicable.

The Technical Project Manager / CAM is responsible for integrating safety management into the planning, developing quality control plans and execute the project from the design level, through the planning of fabrication, to installation and commissioning activities.

The position reports to the Controls Systems Manager.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

Specific responsibilities include (but not limited to) :

  • Develop, review, and optimize the plan and schedule for the design, production, installation, and commissioning.
  • Participate in the engineering effort associated with the design, procurement, manufacturing, installation, check-out, and commissioning of accelerator components.
  • Perform assessment of the cost and schedule activities against the plan for work performed at SLAC, contractors, vendors and at partner labs, ensuring that progress relative to budget and schedule is understood and correctly reported.

Make corrections to the plan as necessary to optimize performance.

  • Ensure technical specifications and procedures are developed in accordance with SLAC processes. Ensure work performed at SLAC and by contractors, vendors, and partner labs meet quality standards.
  • Participate in the planning of the systems integration, installation, check-out, and commissioning of the cryogenic components.
  • Implement safety in design, construction, installation, and operation of the LCLS-II-HE linac.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Bachelor’s degree in physics, engineering or related field and minimum 5 years of relevant experience in accelerator technical projects and in a leadership position for a group of scientists, engineers and technical personnel.
  • Proven leadership in a project environment, providing effective oversight and guidance of operational, management and administrative issues.
  • Previous experience managing large scale electrical installation projects, and / or operation and maintenance of large scientific facilities, complex experiments, or similar industrial installations.
  • Broad and diverse knowledge of project management techniques and methods.
  • Strong analytical and computational skills as well as strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population and ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with others.

IN ADDITION, PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE :

  • Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Working knowledge in implementing project management practices required by DOE Order 413.3 Program and Project Management for Acquisition of Capital Assets, to include project planning, budgeting, scheduling, cost estimating, risk management, and performance management.
  • Experience with Earned Value Management System project management techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to work to an aggressive but realistic schedule and effectively direct a team to achieve the schedule.
  • Experience with the development of procurement documentation, statements of work, and memoranda of understanding.
  • Experience with PLM systems and QA workflows.
  • Experience with Mechanical and Electrical CAD systems.

The expected pay range for this position is $148,000 to $177,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory / Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
