About Us :

Mercado is a lively fast casual restaurant in Upper Montclair, NJ with a focus on hearty staples. The large, hall-like space is inspired by the traditional markets found in city centers of Portugal and Spain, in which patrons gather for a quick bite or coffee in a lively environment.

The multitude of options on the menu speak to the food-hall-like experience, with options from a full brunch menu, to make-your-own bowls, to specialty sandwiches;

all of which include vegan options. At Mercado, customers can also enjoy a full menu of espresso drinks and cold-pressed juices at the barista bar and pair their beverage of choice with a delicious food menu and Portuguese pastries.

Fast casual speaks to the informal nature of ordering food at the counter, food-hall style, but at Mercado customers are encouraged to slow down and enjoy delicious food in good company, surrounded by beautiful design, in a beautiful neighborhood.

Mercado is looking for a dedicated, experienced, talented and passion driven individual that has the ability to motivate, inspire, train and be the leader to fill this position of full-time restaurant manager.

This role is perfect for someone with at least 3 -5 years of related work experience who is pursuing a career in hospitality and is looking for a long-term management role within a growing brand.

We are seeking a professional who is willing and able to train with great communication skills; work directly with Chef on menu ideas and food quality;

and someone that is excited to bring new fresh ideas to the table that will help grow the brand.

Specific duties / responsibilities include :

  • Live Our Vision, Values and Beliefs. Lead and manage all restaurant operations in partnership with Mercado’s owners and Chef to offer a great customer experience, ensure concept vision and Mercado’s standards are executed consistently.
  • Champion the brand’s vision and values and contribute to a culture of positivity and high standards;
  • Front-of-house leadership, including training team members, providing excellent customer service and taking great care of all equipment and facilities;
  • Lead by example in all interactions. Exemplify professionalism and enlightened hospitality in all interactions and especially in difficult situations.
  • Uphold our standards at all times and treat everyone with courtesy and respect;
  • Create an environment that is warm, welcoming and filled with positivity for guests and employees. Assume full responsibility for every aspect of the guest experience, and lead all associates during shifts to do the same.
  • The goal is to grow the team and develop an unique group that loves to come to work every day, shouts good morning, rolls up their sleeves and works together as a team to create great customer experiences;
  • Prepare and implement expanded operating procedures, coordinate restaurant operations during each shift, and determine and implement operating improvements;
  • Run pre-shift meetings, convey key business updates, map and communicate each station coverage plan;
  • Conduct hiring interviews, mentor, train and conduct in-the-moment coaching to further develop the team;
  • Maintain restaurant cleanliness and uphold esthetics standards of Mercado;
  • Monitor staff schedules and ensures that budgeted labor costs are met;
  • Maintain accountability for all internal controls around invoices, cash and other payments handling and procedures;
  • Manage POS system.

Previous management experience in restaurant industry, preferably with restaurant serving fast casual menu

  • Extensive food knowledge, and the ability to remember and recall ingredients and dishes to inform customers and staff
  • Great leadership skills
  • Experience with restaurant management software (TOAST)
  • Professional knowledge and experience on to fully train all staff members
