Job Summary :

This is journey level construction, repair, and remodeling carpentry work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Physical Plant.

The work is performed under the general supervision of a Craftsworker Supervisor.

Responsibilities : Constructs, erects, installs, or repairs structures and fixtures made of wood and all other substitute materials including partitions, joists, studding, and rafters;

wood stairways, window and doorframes, floor coverings, and acoustical ceilings to ensure adequate, safe and operable institutional facilities.

20% Interprets blueprints and drawings to determine specifications and to calculate the materials and equipment required.

Discusses project plan with customer / client

  • 20% Gathers materials, prepares work area, and maintains equipment and supplies needed for jobs
  • 20% Performs skilled carpentry work according to established trade standards and applicable building and safety codes
  • 10% Reviews finished projects with client / customer. Maintains records and reports of work status and completion according to established deadlines and expectations
  • 20% Cleans work area upon completion of projects according to established guidelines and expectations
  • 10% Responsible for asbestos abatement activity to include the disposal of asbestos-base materials 10

according to federal and state regulations.

High School Diploma and the completion of a registered apprenticeship program approved by the Department of Workforce Development as a Carpenter as defined on DWD website -

High school diploma or equivalent, meet required norms on aptitude test (math ? arithmetic, algebra, geometry and their applications.

  • Completion of an apprenticeship approved by the Department of Workforce Development as a Carpenter. Apprenticeship includes a 4 year training program, Evidence of having performed the following activities for at least 6,240 hours : (1) Form building and rough framing 3,000 hours;
  • 2) outside finishing 800 hours; (3) inside finishing 800 hours; (4) interior systems 600 hours; (5) hardware fitting 320 hours;

6) miscellaneous repairs and setting of machinery and equipment, welding and safety 320 hours; and (7) related instruction 400 hours.

Such evidence may include letters or statements from past customers / clients and / or employers. Formal recognition of status by the appropriate international or local trade organization or some type of similar formal validation of journeyman status may also be accepted.

Persons having informal training and experience equivalent to the formal apprenticeship and journeyman status may also be accepted upon submission of documented proof of such training and experience.

Qualifications :

Three years of Journey worker-level experience. Completion of a journey apprentice program preferred.

This has been identified as a Crafts Worker / Trades position. Crafts Workers / Tradesworker may elect an increased vacation allocation with a corresponding reeducation to the prevailing rate.

  • 100 hours $43.55;
  • 140 hours $42.85;
  • 180 hours $42.20;
