Mission or Goal of Unit :
The Department of Epidemiology within the School of Population Health has a dynamic team of faculty and staff with active research programs in behavioral / cancer epidemiology, maternal / child health, psychiatric epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, traumatic brain injury, and social disparities in health.
The Department resides on one of the country's most comprehensive health sciences centers, including - in addition to the School of Population Health - the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, and Health Professions.
The campus also hosts several world-class research centers, including the C. Kenneth and Dianne Wright Center for Clinical and Translational Science, the NCI-designated Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Virginia Institute for Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics, the Center on Society and Health, and many other highly productive research centers.
This location of this Department and School in the state capital also offers opportunities for research collaboration with policy makers and practitioners at local public health departments, state and federal levels.
Chief Purpose of this position :
The Department of Epidemiology in School of Population Health at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) invites applications for a tenure-eligible epidemiology position at the rank of assistant, associate or full professor, commensurate with academic background and experience.
We seek applicants with research expertise areas including but not limited to nutritional epidemiology, cancer epidemiology, addiction and substance abuse disorders, pharmaco-epidemiology, injury and violence prevention, environmental and occupational health, cardiovascular health, or social and health disparities.
Position Responsibilities :
Research :
Engage in scholarly activity to enhance knowledge of Epidemiology, which will contribute to the success of the Department and School.
Establish a programmatic research agenda with clear potential for external funding. Mentor PhD and post-doctoral student scholarship.
Teaching :
Teach courses for the PhD training program in Epidemiology and / or for the MPH program. Advise PhD and MPH students.
Service :
Serve on Departmental, School and / or University committees as assigned. Represent the Department in selected professional organizations and in a professional capacity to their field (e.
g., grant reviewer, conference organizer)
Required Qualifications :
- Candidates must have a doctoral degree in Epidemiology or a related field. Those with a track-record in any of the sub-disciplines mentioned above are encouraged to apply
- Candidates will have well-developed scholarly / research portfolio with clear evidence of multi-disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and grow scholarly activities in the Department
- Candidates will also have experience in teaching and mentoring at the graduate-level
- All candidates must have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
