Job Profile Summary
The Manager, Microbiology supervises the staff in the Microbiology and Serology section. Maintains the operation of the section to meet minimum standards of laboratory accrediting agencies.
Coordinates with Site Supervisors at Network entities to ensure microbiology policies and procedures are consistent throughout the Network.
Oversees general lab functions as assigned.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Supervises the staff assigned to the Microbiology section.
- Together with Laboratory Medical Director or designee, establishes Network practices to meet the microbiology needs of the Medical Staff.
- Reviews all procedures in the section in accordance with lab accrediting agencies' standards.
- Supervises the maintenance of instrumentation and ensures that resources are available for troubleshooting technical and instrument operations.
- Ensures that the quality of testing is maintained according to laboratory policy and complies with licensing and accrediting agencies.
- Prepares the daily work schedule to ensure adequate staffing. Gives advance notice of schedule to staff. Adjusts staffing to accommodate unscheduled staffing concerns.
- Oversees the initiation and design of method evaluations. Supervises the project. Reviews results with Pathologist, or Lab Administrator.
- Ensures proficiency testing meets laboratory accrediting agencies' standards.
- Selects and reviews annually all CPT codes assigned to testing performed in the Microbiology section.
- Establishes highest degree of efficient use of the Laboratory Information System Software.
- Prepares special reports and projects when assigned.
- Serves on various laboratory / hospital related committees. Actively participates on the Infection Control Committee.
- Attends management meetings, continuing education sessions / in-services and weekly laboratory operations group meetings.
- Prepares the section's annual budget for capital equipment, staffing and other expenses. Monitors budget versus actual report throughout the year.
Explains any variances.
- Acts as supervisor in charge of the laboratory when assigned.
- Coaches, councils and disciplines employees. Documents meetings as appropriate.
- Conducts employee performance reviews annually.
- Meets with sales and technical representatives.
- Maintains effective communication within the department through section meetings, supervisors' meetings, meeting with Pathologist, etc.
- Delegates responsibilities and duties to employees in the section so the section runs smoothly in supervisor's absence.
- Participates in hospital Performance Improvement process to resolve system problems and complaints with the service.
- Interviews, hires, and indoctrinates new employees.
- Provides for Continuing Education for employees. Maintains appropriate documentation.
- Acts promptly to investigate / resolve complaints and / or problems in the section / laboratory.
- Maintains knowledge of current technology. Meets continuing education requirements in accordance with laboratory accrediting agencies' standards.
- Demonstrates competency in assigned areas of responsibilities.
- Ensures that technical assistance is available to Coordinator of Point of Care Testing to develop procedures, establish quality control, and maintain programs.
- Complies with network and departmental polices and procedures regarding attendance and dress code.
- Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network / Entity as well as the proper release of information.
- Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.
- Demonstrates / models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external).
- Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate : Clinical Care / Outcomes, Customer / Service Improvement, Operational System / Process, and Safety.
- Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.
- Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.
- Other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS :
Sitting up to 7 hours per day - 2 hour increments. Standing up to 5 hours per day 2 hour increments. Walking - up to 7 hours per day - short increments.
Occasionally uses fingers to manipulate small vials, pipetting, etc. Moderate use of hands for operation of laboratory equipment and computer keyboard.
Occasional lifting of boxes / equipment up to 30 lbs. Occasional pushing / pulling of equipment. Frequent stooping, bending.
Occasional crouching. Frequent reaching above shoulder level and stretching across work area (30" depth). Hearing as it relates to normal, high and low frequencies.
Seeing as it relates to general, far, near, color and peripheral vision. Depth perception.
EDUCATION :
Ph.D. in Clinical Microbiology or
M.S. in Clinical Microbiology or
SM (ASCP) or equivalent
TRAINING / EXPERIENCE :
Minimum of five years clinical laboratory experience and two years supervisory experience.
