Summary :

St. John’s University is seeking a full-time licensed mental professional within the University Center for Counseling and Consultation at the Queens campus who will provide clinical counseling services to the St.

John’s School of Law student population. The individual will be responsible for providing mental health evaluations / intake assessments, individual counseling, consultation, and crisis intervention to a diverse population of students within a brief therapy framework.

The individual will report to the Director of the Center for Counseling and Consultation and to the Law School’s Dean of Students and will have a physical presence in the CCC (Center for Counseling and Consultation) and the Law School.

In addition to clinical services, they will also develop and provide mental health and wellness programming to the Law School’s constituencies (students, faculty, and administrators).

Responsibilities :

Counseling : Provide assessment and recommendations for appropriate treatments for law students.

Consult with Law School faculty and staff on issues relevant to student academic performance, emotional well-being, and psychological functioning.

Offer crisis intervention for students in emergency situations and participate in the center’s on-call after-hours rotation.

Collaborate with the Law Student Services department on wellness initiatives and student support; work with Law School student organizations on programming initiatives centering on wellness and wellbeing.

Develop and collate wellness resources (tip sheets, wellness newsletters, etc.) for distribution to students and use on an as-needed basis.

Provide referral services to outside therapists, clinics, and treatment facilities.

Maintain timely and accurate records according to professional standards and state and federal law.

Offer consultation and education to Law School faculty and staff regarding student behavioral and emotional issues, classroom concerns, and current mental health issues.

Respond to requests for classroom participation by Law faculty and for information / reports from the community about services and resources.

Provide workshops and outreach to Law School student groups, faculty, administrators, and members of the University community.

Engage in outcomes assessment with individual clients and center goals.

Participate in staff meetings in the Counseling Center.

Partake in discrete projects as needs arise.

Qualifications :

Licensure as a clinical social worker, mental health counselor, or psychologist in the State of New York is required.

One to two years of post-graduate experience, preferably in a counseling center setting, is preferred.

Experience working with the law student population, including a strong knowledge of the challenges experienced by such students (as well as those of the legal profession), is preferred.

Knowledge or and demonstrated competence and sensitivity in working with a multi-cultural population; a commitment to being part of an inclusive and anti-racist law school.

Strong diagnostic and therapeutic skills, particularly using short-term treatment interventions.

Demonstrated commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice and personal and professional integrity.

Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to collaborate with other departments and college administrators.

Strong crisis assessment and crisis management skills.

Excellent organizational, communication, and human relations skills.

This position is subject to a comprehensive background screen with employment contingent upon satisfactory results.

$85,000 - $95,000

Staff Psychologist Level 1

Ph.D. or PsyD; 2 - 4 years of clinical experience

$83,000 - $95,000

This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
